Get her to trim them, otherwise they could rip off and cause a lot of pain. She can probably get away with just trimming them and not totally cutting them off below the fingertip, but yeah...the long nails will need to go. It's pretty hard to grab a crimper when you have an inch of fingernail between the rock and your fingertip.

i've been a serial nail biter since i was a child. about 6 months before i started climbing, i kicked the habit completely. i finally had girly hands, and even got my nails to the length where i could paint them too. then i went climbing for the first time. the next day i cut all my nails off. take her, and if she really likes it she should notice that it would be easier (and safer, don't want to rip a nail off) if she cut her nails.

If it's her first time out climbing, she's not too likely to be sending routes that will require massive crimping. If you put her on a jug haul, the nails shouldn't get in the way. Of course, if she's at all interested in continuing with the sport, she'll likely decide on her own to cut off the nails when they become a hinderance. Not that I've ever had long nails - I played piano up until I started climbing!

I'm staring at my stubby nails right now :D I'm sure she'll be careful with her nails, but maybe you should give her a gift certificate for a manicure. She'll need it for all the chips she's sure to get!

You gals are so positive! I thought for sure this was a troll. I guess hanging out in "Aid" has made me too cynical. Vidrio...if your gf doesn't cut her nails before she goes, she'll probably just chew them off when she gets there. My friend who only climbs once in a while always ends up doing this.

I have to agree with thewallress here. She'll figure out what's comfortable one way or the other...preferably not the ouchie way!

I know that given climbing I will never have classically lovely hands, but I really would love to know what it takes to quit the nail biter syndrome.

I've had to take a break from climbing for the last month and after two years, I finally have nice nails again! Kind of cool. Can't wait to rip them off, though. One other thing to note: nice nails will get snagged on rock before they get ripped. That sucks, too.

Don't you girls, and guys for that matter, have a nail clipper in your first aid kit? After the first nail tears and hurts, pull out the clipper. I''l join in with the "I used to..." stuff-- played classical guitar for many years, you really have to have nais for that, at least 4 good ones anyway. LOL, now if my nails make it to 1/16 of an inch, they get clipped.
