Where did the word "beta" come from? As in, "Hey dude, thanks for the beta on that last climb" Dictionary says- 1. The second letter of the Greek alphabet. 2. The second item in a series or system of classification. 3. A mathematical measure of the sensitivity of rates of return on a portfolio or a given stock compared with rates of return on the market as a whole. A beta of 1.0 indicates that an asset closely follows the market. 4. Physics. A beta particle. 5. Chemistry. The second position from a designated carbon atom in an organic molecule at which an atom or a radical may be substituted. 6. Computer Science. A beta version.

There's some debate about its origin, but I think the consensus is that Jack Mileski coined the term refererring to information about a route that is so detailed, it resembles a "beta-max" video tape.

Remember those or are you a little young? Actually, VCR's had two different formats. Beta-max, and VHS. At the time, Beta-max was the more popular of the two. And I think the previous mention of it being used in describing the help given a climber seems pretty accruate... but it's been a while since I heard it... later.

Travis So the word "dude" (used to bestow coolness) has it's origins linked to a name cowboys gave eastern cityboy poseurs. How ironic.
