I know how to use and make prusiks...but they were on a friends rack, so now i am buying my own.
How long of a cord should I buy, how thick?
What should it be made out of, what's the average price?
Any special kind you would recommend?

I have some prussik cord made from about three and a half feet of 5mm spectra cord (I think). I cannot remember exactly how expensive it is, but is under a dollar a foot.
With prussiks you want your cord to be significantly smaller diameter than your rope. As for length, go for longer as opposed to shorter, as double fisherman's knots take up quite a bit of cord.

well if your just going to use it for repelling kinda (as a brake) then get about a metre, thats all i use mine for and i donlt even use it anymore, one bad experience ruined it, but i have seen other ppl do stuff with it and they have TONS of it, not really sure what they use it for but i guess it works. it i usually really cheap too!

I use 5mm static cord which costs about $0.97/m (3ft / meter).
I made my purssik cords for the auto brake rappel backup from 1.25m (4 feet) of cord tying the loop with double fisherman knots.
Works great for me and they can be used for more than just auto-brake.

I think I would prefer regular static line for a prusik knot or equivilant. Spectra is made of kevlar and as such has a lower melting point, which doesn't really matter unless you are dragging one rope across another. Hey that's what you do when you rap.
Probably doesn't really matter, but then again regular static is cheaper than spectra too.

PS Yeah check the link to PTPP's post learning more than the absolute minimum has saved many a persons life. And knowing the absolute minimum has killed many a person.

Spetcra and Dyneema tend not to hold a knot so well either. 5mm-7mm Nylon ia fine for prussiks.
