Check out this book." Extreme Alpinism " by Mark Twight published by the Mountaineers
Has a ton of practical and useful information on Alpine climbing.
Great reading, will answer lots of questions, expescially for beginers and novices.

Twight's Kiss or Kill: Confessions of A Serial Climber is a great book, too. More of a narrative than an informative read, though.

I have Twight's Kiss or Kill... he is one of the greatest satire writers I've ever read.

I like Freedom of the hills as well but it just doesn't go into the extent of Alpinism that Twight does. I do agree... every climbers bible.

Freedom of the hills is a waelth of knowledge, and a great alround starting point

Found Kiss or Kill a bit eclectic, at the same time he is telling you how much climbing means to him, he is saying how much he hates it. A good look at himself though, most people would not have the guts to be that honest, and a definate break from 200 of so copy cat everest books

Extreme Alpinism is a good way to go narrow down "freedom of the hills", like having some one to proof read it and tear out all the good pages for you, then write some notes beside them as well.

Did you check out the recommended reading at the back of the book? found it a bit scary how much of the same stuff we read
