Wondering if any of you have some suggestions for a winter vacation for climbers and non climbers alike. My SO, son and I are avid climbers, my teenage daughters are not. I need to find a place where we all can enjoy our vacation, i.e. I can climb and the girls can beach. Any suggestions? Thanks much for your help.

California will be your best bet for the best of both worlds during the winter. Depending on the weather, you can go to Bishop and climb/ski/mountain bike/hike anytime in some of the more pristine areas. If you are looking for beaches, then southern ca. in winter is not bad, though the beaches can get chilly (otherwise known as 50-60 degrees out here) and again, have everything else available. Mexico is great as well, but not as family friendly where the climbing is. Thailand is another option that I personally have never been to, but everyone I talk to that has, absolutely enjoyed.

None of these would be in my budget, but they sure would be yummy compromises:

Viet Nam
Greece
Australia

Joshua Tree can be nice climbing in winter (weather can be erratic/harsh though). have not been to salton sea but alot of people seem to bring kayaks for visiting there (outside of jtree I think east or south east). if your girls hike, jtree can be nice for them too.

I hear there's a girl's surf/climb camp in San Diego but that's 2.5-3 hr's drive from jtree. if everything fails, there is also a huge shopping outlet (Cabazon) about 30 min. from jtree (hoping not to be a bad influence here).

I haven't been yet - but Baja is definitely on my list: climbing, windsurfing, horseback riding, kayaking . . . they seem to have a bit of everything AND a nice beach for chillin'!
