A dog you take bouldering should be named "Spot." A dog you take cragging should be named "Cliff." Curt

my dog's name is Kaluha. She is a golden shepard mix. It doesn't have much to do with climbing but we are good at drinking too. word

Flash- Mike Artz's blue heeler... ugly as sin, but to this day the only dog I've ever seen at a crag who could act like they belonged there (that is: not barking, whining when owner climbed, stepping on your rope, nosing in your pack, crapping on the path, starting shnit with other dogs, digging holes, or chasing wildlife).

Ok...I can't help myself. I'm going to play the annoying cautionary role for just a second. I volunteer for a dog rescue organization here in Marin County, CA and see way too many dogs that need homes. Please, please don't get a dog because you think it is a cool climbing accessory. There are way more dogs than there are good owners in the world. Don't get a dog because he matches your bouldering pad. Don't get a dog because he'll look cool riding in your Subaru. Don't get a dog so you can come up with a chic climbing name. Ok... I feel better now. Have at it. :P

I would vote for "Piton" I liked all the reasons NOT to get a dog, So I give you the only reason I will get a dog.....and that will be when I find one that will follow me around and pick up and bag my crap! Then carry it to the trash as well. Now thats a dog! bill

8) I would have to say Tank my English Mastiff. He is truly a joy to have at the crags and being over 200lbs and just over a year old you don't have to worry about anyone going in your stuff. 8)

Biscuit. I know of two dogs named Biscuit. One of them actually climbs (think Front Range Freaks), the other is the loyal companion of a freaking rad climber.

A few cheeseball Bozemanites names. Bridger, Madison, Gallatin, Emerson. The best climbing dog I go climbing with is Bob aka. Stinks. He's also the coolest dog I've ever met and like him more than my own. He's really into alpine climbing, can deal with sport but prefers multi pitch trad. Also a chic magnet. Likes to lick himself, lucky bastard.

kapono.................because he's mischievious. But then again, all aussie shepherds are. Pretty cool how he watches me climb, though. He usually sits right at the base and cries until I get back down. He almost had a heart attack when I took a minor whipper.

Billy Bob. Try it. Rolls off the tongue when shouted. Is easily shortened or lengthened, depending upon your mood (ex. Hey Bill, good boy! Or "WILLIAM ROBERT! HEEL!"). And there isn't possibly another dog at the crag who will respond. The only worry is your brother William, or your other brother William, will respond instead. WHY they keep doing that I'll never know. It's annoyingashell and confuses the dog. You talking to me? You must be talking to me? Cause there ain't no other SOB's in the room! You're talking to me, right? DMT

I have never done a day of yoga, and most of my climbing threads are PRANA, they are one of the few companies that don't feel a t-shirt should be priced over $30. Anyway, my crag mutt is called Leo (or "Leo of the large ass" recently- he has been put on low cal food  ). I think Biner would be good for a dog with a little spunk, I knew a dog named Rope when I was a kid, but his owner didn't climb. Just don't do what this one woman at outr campsight a few months back did. The poor dog was named "Wind in Hair" and she used the whole name EVERY time. We nicknamed her "Shut your trap" and a few others I won't mention here.

How about LYDAH? I really like that name a lot. You all may wonder were it comes from. Well it's an acronym for Leave Your Dogs At Home. 90% of climber dogs suck, or are stuck, at crags. The ones that suck are the ones that the owners can't control and wander around the base of the cliffs. The ones that are stuck are the ones that get tied to a tree because they most likely suck when not. If you have to tie the dog to a tree you shouldn't be taking it to the crag. Just imagine yourself being tied to a tree a majority of the day. The other 10% of dogs are cool and owners great job on knowing how to control your dogs.
