With the price and size of high quality consumer digital cameras comming down, I would be supprised if none of you have had experiance with this technology. These little cameras typically have a 3x zoom usally 38-100mm equivelant. does the lack of wide angle turn some of you off? is the big time zoom (4x or more) in such a small package outweigh the lack of wide angle? my profile pic was taken with a conon digital elph s300 [www.dcresource.com] that a friend of mine brought climbing. I thought it was great to get instant feedback on the shots, and be able to zoom into the action with out getting in the way. This thing is super small too (about the size of a disposable) really easy to stuff in a pack and take along everywhere. I have been looking at the consumer Digital SLR Canon D-30 [www.dpreview.com] .. has anyone used this, or had experiance with it while climbing? I have taken ALL of my pictures submitted here at RC.COM with my OLYMPUS CAMEDIA c2000 digital camera... About the zoom... well... you can allways take the picture on Super High Quality format and zoom in on your computer... About the wide angels... I take several pictures and use the QUICK STICHT software to put them together, which is accomplish perfectly up to 16 pics!!! And not even mentioning the easy task of uploading the pics to the PC instead of scanning them... I will say that the "dark side" is the ligth at the end of my tunnel... check my pics and you will see it too!

I grabbed one of the digitals from work once and took it out. The quality was great (It was just one of the Sony ones) but I felt really guilty about getting it all chalky. I personally won't rush out and buy one, but I'll take one if it comes my way.

I am taking a class at USI this coming semmester called Digital Photography. They give you a digital camera to use plus teach you how to use photoshop. I CAN'T WAIT! Maybe I can get a free download of photoshop.

considering digital, looking at all the beta on them is a bit overwhelming. so any input on this forum, will be way more useful than a sales person.

I have used both the Canon and Sony digitals and prefer the Sony Mavica which uses a standard 3 1/2 floppy diskette. The advantage to me is that it doesn't require any special cables or accessories. Just stick the floppy in your computer and begin working on them. If I am going to use them on the web I take them at a medium resolution but use high for anything I will want to make prints from. The newer Sony burns them to a CD which is great since you can take a lot more pics without changing. The 3 1/2 floppys will only take about 40 on medium resolution. The CD will save about 160 on each one. They are a bit pricey though but I have found the FD-97 for as low as $570. Not bad for a camera that is running close to $1000 most places. Climb On

Until now my photos were taken with a normal camera, but my dad has just bought a digital one (Canon Powershot S40). I hope he will now take more pictures of me climbing.

I tried shooting with the Canon D-30. It's a great camera, but the size of the ccd, which is smaller than ordinary film, will make all your lenses to appear "longer". A 35mm would give you about the same angle as 50mm with an ordinary film. Since I like wide angle, and I can't afford the extra wide angle lenses, I am back on my old camera (at least until they manage to build a bigger ccd). Best wishes, Rado

I simply would not be intered in a Non SLR digital camera. If i'm gonna spend $5000, I may as well get a F100 and a full set of lenses! Does anyone know if there's a shutter like device on digital cameras that will let you have the same flexibilty for doing startrails or super fast action shots?

Well I got a decent tax return so I broke down and bought a digital. I originally bought a Olympus Camedia 510 and it took an ok picture but it chewed batteries so I returned it. No I have a Nikon 775 and it seems pretty decent. Good quality pics and a decent software bundle.

Been using Olympus C-700 for 1 year. Impeccable quality, time after time. The lack of posts from its use speaks to my inability to cram climbing into 13.5 hr shifts and 2.3 children. (Coming soon though, by God!)

First of all, andy lemon, i want to know where you go to school....a camera to use for your class..awesome! I just got an Olympus D-510 for xmas, and it works good for me. It does eat up batteries rather quickly, though. And I would have liked higher zoom capabilities (but you can get up to 9X in digital zoom mode). I will have to try using it in SHQ mode and zooming/cropping on my computer. Overall, I am happy with this little camera!
