I'll be travelling with the family end of July and want some info on local (Brevard) climbing. We plan to mnt. bike and paddle but want to try some climbing as well. I want some easy TR stuff. 5.4-.9 for the kids. I see the Dbase is loaded with lots of sport and trad but not a lot on TR. Thanks folks, Charlie

hi charlie, great choice; looking glass is a beautiful area! there are 2 north carolina books, a "more complete" and "selected". would suggest the "complete" for your needs as the selected climbs book has more higher grade stuff. although the maps (for the routes) in both are questionable for some areas. the more complete book is the one sf suggested, and is written by thomas kelley; the selected climbs book is by yon lambert and harrison shull. another suggestion is pilot mountain for top roping. i believe it would be about a 2-hr drive east of the brevard area, but has oodles of walls for top roping. you could easily spend a day there climbing. if you get a chance, moutain bike the bent creek area in brevard. it has a variety of trails, many that are kid-friendly, but also has some nice single track. there is an outfitters shop (and bike shop) right in brevard before you turn off for the trails. unfortunately, i can't think of either name. i've only been in the outfitter store and the couple that owns it is quite familar with the area and can give you better information about the biking trails. haven't paddled in the brevard/asheville area. the new river is about an hour and a half drive (from the brev./ashe. area), in jefferson, nc (outside of boone). hava great trip!

Thanks for the info. I just bought a 2nd edition of Kellys book I think it 's up to a 3rd edition. Is there much changed between the 2 editions. Thanks again, Charlie PS I plan on checking out Bent Creek area for biking. I leave next week for 2 weeks of play.

I think Looking Glass might be a little much for the kids, The only even marginally easy stuff for TR is on the South Face (way south end) Looking Glass is a very serious rock. I would head over to Crowders Mt near Charlotte.

If you have some gear and long sections of webbing, you can set-up several easy topropes from the ledge above Short Man's sorrow at the S. Face of the Glass. This ledge is bordered on the left by P1 of Bloody Crack. You can either lead one of the climbs below the ledge (ranging from 5.5 to 5.8) or do a short and easy 5th class scramble to the right. Be prepared to deal with the hoardes as the area is popular. There are also one or 2 moderate climbs to the left (5.6 or so) that can be TRed. At this time of year, I would head to the Glass as opposed to Crowders due to the weather.

Hey all: Me again. The Glass looks hard. Some climbs but not many for 5.6-5.8 TR. I read the 2nd edition of Kellys book and seems that Snake den(?) and Devil Courthouse (??) fit the bill. Anyone been ? I believe the books says that one of them (Snake den??) has a lot of loose rock. Thanks Charlie

Don't go to Snakes Den. Look at the name. Besides it is allways full of wasps and yellow jackets.

Hey? Is Snake Den really full of wasps and hornets or is that more urban (rural) legend from the guidebook? I eyeballed the wall right after a rainstorm, so could not set foot on it, but it IS an attractive crag. Beta, please?

Yes, it is full of them. Just go up there and look. Also if you walk up the access trail on the left of the cliff you need to avoid stepping on any grass as the FS moniters it for impact. Or at least they did about 3 years ago.
