wanting to get some hex's.
Slingin' them myself, or getting the ones with cables? Is it just going to end up being user preference?
I was thinkin this wire'd possibly be a pain in the ass placin' and removin' in comparison to corded ones....
I mean for a set of 8 unslung $39.95 (anywhere else cheaper?) ((acmeclimbing))
Wired from pretty much any other site:
$100-$130 range...

I used wired Hexes and love 'em.
However, I'm sure you're gonna get a load of different opinions/preferences.
Whichever you choose, hexcentrics are the best.

I prefer slung hexes. They're more versatile, and have less tendency to "walk" out of their placements when the rope (or your knee) bump the sling. We discussed this hex thing before, and my opinionated ideas can be found in that forum. In my amazing erudition, however, I can't find that post...I thought it was in either the gearhead or trad section...

Buck there was a number of great posts on this very topic. Unfortunately I couldn't find it maybe someone can locate it
I sling my own hexes with spectra or gemini cord. My main reasoning for this (and you'll hear this from a couple people) is the hex will be less likely to walk out of it's placement. The wire hexes are not as maliable as those slung with spectra. Alot of the time I don't even have to put a draw or runner on my hex placements! And in a pinch I have used my hexes as a draw
Anyway that's my 2 cents worth!

If you bought un-slung/un-wired hexes with the idea of slinging them yourself, how would you do it? Buy a bunch of 5mm Spectra cord and tie with a double (triple?) fisherman's? Use Perlon cordlette? Something else? Different knots?
Still learning...every day. Thanks for your indulgence...

reno, yes indeed. I use 5.5mm spectra and use a triple fishermans knot. For sizes 9-11 I have the knot inside the hex for a neater appearance. The spectra is very stiff when it is new so it's a little tricky to tie knots with.

I agree with gumby. I have new plastic hexes - they are half the weight, much quieter, same strength and look good, i sling the with spectra. You must use a triple fishermens with spectra - it is more slippery.

For a little bit extra, Wild Country have cool hexes slund with a dyneema sling. They're lightwieght and no bulky knot to deal with. They're colour coded too. very seeeeeexxxy!!!
