Does anyone have any suggestion about a good book (or website or any other info source) about basic geology, esp. as it applies to climbing? It seems if you are gonna climb it you should know what it is...

Do you mean like what kind of rocks are good for forming good routes? Or which rock gives you better grip, and is less crumbly? [ This Message was edited by: farrensbooks on 2002-01-19 13:07 ]

Actually, i'm thinking of a bit more wholistic view than that. i'll probably climb whatever i can, but i'd like some idea of how the various rocks got to be the way they are and what are typical features. For example, reading about Yosemite (which i believe is all granite) a big feature is cracks and chimneys. Why? Or Zion. It's all sandstone. What's sandstone like (i think soft, but there's more to it). And so on. Knowing what's going on makes it all a lot more interesting. i guess i just think too much

I couldn't think of any books offhand, but I would just go to a nice big bookstore, or ever better, your local library, and look though the natural sciences section. You're more then likely to find a wealth of information related to the rocks you want information on.
