I injured my knee while playing basketball (my first love) which ultimately led me to start climbing (my new love). I've found that climbing seems more therapeutic and better (i guess) for my knee than obviously basketball. So I've only been climbing for 3 months I guess and i have a torn minicus and damaged ACL the whole time. I was wondering if anyone else had been climbing with torn or damaged ACL, MCL or minicus (sp)??? Or if anyone thought i was just plain stupid for doing so.

well I'll tell you that what you should do is take it real easy and rest until it heals. What I did when I slit my finger to the bone and had five stitches is a different story, but rest is the recommended course of action. :D Just try not to make it worse. ;)

I tore my ACL and MCL. Once I could walk without the knee bending the wrong way I was back climbing. :P

I have been the down road of multiple knee injuries (skiing takes its toll too). Both ACL's, MCL on one leg and most of the miniscous removed on one. Surgery is a wonderful thing. I'm nearly 90% these days 2 years after the terrible triad. Descents can still be hell if I don't keep my legs in shape. Be careful of continued stress on a damaged miniscus as it seems to lend itself to more long term damage and when they "work on it" they like to whittle. Grafts and replacements on the other parts do wonders. Even with surgery I was climbing 4 mos. later.

I can tell you from personal experience, 4 knee reconstructions, a few screws, and no patella tendon, 6 total knee surgeries soon to be 7 & 8, and 2 shoulder reconstructions... Climb ON!!!! Just be cognizant of where your knee is, and if viable... Wear a brace! Cheers!

In reply to: maybe if ya'll let your injuries heal before climbing you'd climb harder? Sorry but I'm not sitting completely to let it heal. Just climb smarter and know your limits on climbing....

One small piece of advice I left out.. Be very leary about the dreaded Hell (I mean Heel) Hooks.. I busted my 2nd ACL graft doing one.. Other than that.. If you can get to the crag... you can climb. :D Cheers H

A ligament tear may scar down with time, but it is unlikely (The ACL is a ligament not a tendon). It is not like a tendonitis that will heal with rest and time. You may as well climb and do anything else you like as long as you are cognizant of your knee laxity and make adjustments as necessary. Keep the muscles strong and work a lot on your balance and proprioception to help avoid further injury. For proprioception you should work with balance boards or do one leg standing exercises progressing to having your eyes closed. Where an ACL brace when possible and be aware that you are at risk of ongoing cartiledge and meniscus injury without a tight ACL.

- I've been climbing sans ACL for a month now. (Injured three months ago) I figured I'd have to get under the knife and get the replacement before I did much but I guess I'm a on the luky end of things. My Doc has me rehabbing, building up all the muscles, especially the hamstring. It sounds like your ACL was not snapped but torn a bit so I'd say just work on rehabhing and keep an eye out for limitations. Let pain and instablilty be your guide. Don't push it. Snapped, severly torn ACLs don't heal. but some people are lucky and can still do quite bit witout them. I still haven't done any cutting sport like B-ball, nor do I think i should anytime soon. I think climbing isn't too bad for you, I'd stay away from bouldering though. Above all....get your Ortho's advice! Good Luck!
