there is something you can put on called Ivy Block before you're exposed, and helps too to take a shower and wash all your clothes. The oil will stay in the clothes and you can get it again. every part of the poison oak plant - root, stems, leaves, can infect you. Don't know about poison ivy, though...

there is another product that you can use to wash with after exposure - check your camping supply store.

Keep it uncovered and cool - and don't scratch. Heat will make it itchy.. Try Benadryl to control the itch.
You might need Predisone or cortizone if it spreads and is making you miserable.

Try a wire brush and bleach, and write back in the morning.

If the itching is unbearable. Then something hot will work. Like oatmeal. :D

Not really a cure but for temporary relief when you take a shower spray the hottest water you can possibly stand on the infected area...ahhhh practically oragasmic. I'm serious do it, don't knock it till you try it.

My dumbass roomate did just that. He still has some scars on his legs from pouring it directly onto the infected area.

I've heard that simply washing with mild soap and water after contact can prevent a breakout--however, we hardly ever realize we've just brushed up against until the next day.

For itch treatment, I like Gold Bond--seems to do the trick.

I've got this amazing gel called Rhuli. It is a cooling gel. I don't believe it really treats the problem but it sure does help you feel better. I would suggest taking Benadryl orally and then coating your body in Rhuli. You can buy it in most drug stores. The stuff is great.

I am extremely allergic to Poison Ivy. We're talking hospital time. I have tried everything. The best thing for me is Fels Naptha soap. It is a laundry bar. Get it at the grocery store in the laundry detergent section. I was with this soap regulary, it does a great job of breaking down the oils. then I use a doctor prescribed steroid cream. works great. or at least speads up the horible process.

If you get it bad, go to the doctor, and get them to give you a steroid shot, OR, simply take a couple of Claritin. It will be gone by tomorrow.

I promise!

Home Remedy = usually ineffective, possibly dangerous, made-up stuff

As watersprite suggested, IvyBlock will protect you when out in the ivy. Apply before exposure. Technu will decontaminate after the exposure. Otherwise wash oil off with copious amounts of water ASAP. Go get steroid shots for bad reactions. Antihistamines also good preventative for reaction.

This cant be true. You can buy claritin off the shelves now. They would be marketing this as a cure for Poison Ivy if it actually cured it in a day.

I imagine the only difference between the over the counter kind and the Prescription kind is the dosage.

Last time I had poison Ivy I was about to go to the doc, and my dad brought me home a sample of Claritin. It cleared it up by the next day. It didin't work quite as well as a Steroid shot, but worked nonetheless.

Honest!

this isn't a home remedy, but its one that actrually works

http://www.zanfel.com you should be able to find a store in your area that sells this stuff

i took me two or three treatments for a pretty severe case of poison oak (I handled the bare branches), a week ago i gave the rest of my leftover zanfels to a friend and his poison oak was gone as soon as he washed with this stuff

The rash, itch and blistering, it will clear up in about 10 days. I have it on my arm now. LOTS of it in my backyard I'm trying to get rid of. I just ignore it until it's gone. Go check one of the poison ivy, oak and sumac sites, they will have more info for you. Better info than you will get here.

I wasn't really commenting so much on the "joke" as I was the idea that someone should turn to home "remedies" first, which as I said, are usually bullshiot. So you never had a roommate that did that?

I've had the same problem with poison oak. The only thing that has ever worked for me and several friends that have had it is GOLDENSEAL. You can get it at healthfood stores. I start by popping the little blisters wiping the area with alcohol. I apply vitamin E oil to it and spread the goldenseal on the wound and bandage it. Do this every day and in three to four days the symptoms will be gone. Goldenseal is green and it looks really bad. I have seen manufactured versions of this in healthfood stores but have never tried them. I read about this curein Prevention magazine about twenty-five years ago and it has worked better than any medication I have ever gotten through a doctor.

Collect jewel weed wich can grow near poison ivy and rub it on the infected area. This will speed up the process.

re: kidding? some people might take you seriously. DOn't post bullshit - if you can't be helpful = keep your trap shut.

Fels Naptha - active ingredient is lye....

If you are allergic to acacia DO NOT USE GOLDENSEAL. A little can kill you.

people, people, go to the doc - don't listen to people on an internet site...

I've not been exposed to this before (thank god), but understand the discomfort. Put Witch Hazel on the itchy spot...it's very soothing!
Do not use oral or topical steroids, unless you've become systemically ill with fever or other symptoms. These drugs can relieve symptoms, but they directly suppress immune function and are toxic to your body.
