I'll be in the Whitney/Russell area for the first few weeks in august and was wondering what the average temps are while climbing. I know Bishop is hell hot but while on the face what can i expect? Is it going to be a shorts and T shirt affair with a jacket just in case or is it going to be a jacket and pants deal with a down jacket for a back up? thanks

Tough call right now. We've been getting alot of thunderstorms and the nights have been cold in the Sierra. I would suggest bringing all options and look out for the lightening. Hopefully the weather breaks soon b/c it's been a real bummer.

Just got back from an attempted Langley to Russell trip. Baged it in and went down the tourist trail when it started snowing as we summited Muir yesterday after three days of generally rainy weather. Aug is generally your best bet but be prepared for anything from blazing heat, (most probable) to short snow flurries and T storms. Light Gortex shell, Long lightweight pants, expedition weight long underwear top as a sweater, and light down sweater for emergency use and you're set. Don't forget a light long sleeve shirt and hat to keep the sun off also. It can be as debiltating as the cold.
