Hey everybody. My older brother has been getting into climbing so this semester I decided to take a rock climbing class for my PE. We're just getting started but I would like to learn some techniques for holding (not sure if there is a special term) the holds. Is there any site that has kind of like a dictionary of climbing with pictures so I can see them? Also any comments on the Cobra slippers. That's what I think I'm getting. Finally, anybody here who go to MTSU? I'd like to meet you and maybe go over to the gym and climb. [ This Message was edited by: qacwac on 2002-01-24 17:35 ]

You can try www.8a.nu click articles and select the one on gripping positions -- it's a good place to start. I'd recommend against getting cobras if you're really just starting. Cobras are cambered, meaning they force your toes into a curled position. This is great if you're climbing on overhanging terrain but you'd probably be better served by finding a flatter soled, maybe even stiffer, all around shoe. (I'm not saying cobras can't do it all but you'd have to have the experience to make them worth the money).

Thanks sidepull. Can you or anyone else recommend any flat sole shoes?

There are a lot of shoes on the market. You have to try them on to fit your own feet because everyone has a different opinions (or I should say different feet). Shoe performance, all around, smearing and edging shoes all depend on where you climb or what you climb on!! Karen

Boreal Aces or La Sportiva Mythos are good all-around climbing shoes. Also, check out the following links for past discussions on shoes: http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=5834&forum=40&27 http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=4096&forum=40&14

qacwac i say go with the cobras!! buy them, they are s--- cheap and i like them, they arent that agressive but still CAN be a good beginner shoe. me and my brother started climbing the same time, i bought the mythos a beginner flat sole blah blah blah shoe. he bought the cobras. he saved 40 dollars and had a cool pair of shoes. last year i bought some more 'agressive' type shoes and im never going back to the mythos. what im trying to say is yes the cobras have a cambered toe, but they are unlined leather that willl stretch and if he is a begginer he will most likely buy em big and not tight, you will be fine. im typing meaningless shit, hope this helped. andrew

I had a pair of the cobras and really loved them! They got stolen and now ive got the 5.10 spire which are cool for indoor stuff, but ive got a pair of the dragons too which are good for technical routes.

I have a pair of Five-Tens that are one step up from the base level with Stealth C4 soles and I love them. I stick to walls like nothing else. They're a bit uncomfortable for me as the rubber ends on my toe and digs in . . . but that's what callouses are for.

Thanks guys. I'm going with the Cobras. I just got to go find a place to try them on and see what size I need. I think REI has them.

Just remember with any type of "slipper shoe" its going to be alot harder on your feet in terms of using physical strength. This is good for training but dont be upset if you find it hard to climb in them.
