I am panning on visiting my sister in Munich at the end of October and I am looking to go climbing in the area. I am thinking of heading to the Dolomites maybe doing some mountaineering. Any suggestion on multi pitch climbs around 5.8 trad or 5.10 sport. Also for late October how is the weather for climbing?

Cima Tre Lavardo near Cortina is of course always an option but is usually very crowed. I lived and climbed in the area of the Dolimites due north of Vencenzia and Verona in an area called the Pasubio. It offers many walls over a 1000' aqnd routes of all difficulties. Also has a lot of Alpine to offer. Try the Susa area up by Bolzano, also many possibilities. We would stay at the hut for that area and make climbs all around. The locals are happy to show you around and you can always link up with a guide. I reccomend that as a time saver so you'll get more climbs in. As to weather , fall is the planting season in northern Italy with the rains coming from mid sep and lasting off and on through out the winter, snow at the higher elevations so you should be prepared for Alpine accents. If I can answer any more questions PM me and I will respond promptly. Dick

I climbed in Italy in the Dolomites last September. Had a good time but it rained about half the time. We did Torre Firenze which is about 5.6, 10 or so pitches and the Second Sella Tower which is 5.8 about 8-9 pitches. Both were alot of fun but alittle crowded and moderate rock fall. First place in 20+ years of climbing that I have actually worn a helmet and also the first place that I have used a helmet! Beautiful place to climb and hike. Definetly worth checking out. There is a guide book called "Classic Dolomite Climbs" available thru REI that has the info and I can recommend a great place to stay for under 50 USD. Jack
