is 1" the standard? just harder or is it not a big difference? hopefully when i finally see my apartment in Atlanta I'll have room out back for a slackline... so this may all be for naught

Sure...9/16", 1", 2", Use whatever you want. All widths and lengths give you a different ride. Try them all. The only reason 1" appears to be the standard, is because it is the easiest to find at your local shop. Best of luck!
