Tools without leashes are used for ice climbing competitions, where the rules don't allow leashes.

Leashless tools also offer some interesting possibilities. For example you can switch the hands without making another tool placement, which is impossible with leashes.

Best wishes,
Rado

When the comps started this feature -- the hardness issue was part of the reason they decided to do it...sort of an added difficulty factor I guess.

I think a judge got beaned by a DQed climber last year at a comp, but I can't remember if the tool was leashless -- the dude threw it in anger and accidentally smacked the judge in the bucket. Oops.

Grivel makes a comp tool -- it's leashless, and has a funky grip to ease the fatigue from not having a leash. I swung it a few times -- very nice, but way specialized. I don't think it even comes with adze/hammer.
