The latest issue of the CASBC newsletter will be coming out soon. I copied an excerpt from it below, which I thought people should read. Of particular importance is that there have been two accidents on the Lower Malamute within one month. Both accidents required the cooperation of BC Rail. At a time when our relations with BC Rail are less that stellar, this is not a good thing. They have already bolted a sign next to Clean Crack and Hand Jive. If clashes continue between BC Rail and climbers, they may take their actions farther. They do have 8m on each side of their rail which they could blast or spray with concrete. It would be a pity if this happened to the Lower Malamute. Please consider this when you're deciding whether you climb on the Lower Malamute or not. Brock From the CASBC newsletter: LOWER MALEMUTE All climbers should be aware that B.C. Rail refuses public access to its right-of-way at the lower Malemute; it considers anyone on its property to be a trespasser, subject to arrest or a $115 fine. B.C. Rail’s property is all land within 8m horizontally of the centre of its tracks, on both sides. About half the climbs at the lower Malemute, and access routes, are affected. B.C. Rail recently placed a warning sign where the main lower Malemute access trail reaches the tracks, and is considering other action. Malemute-related developments: -On 19th July an American climber fell off Clean Crack and was hurt. Squamish Search & Rescue evacuated him, using a B.C. Rail speeder. On 6th August, Michael Riley fell off Clean Crack, was hurt, and evacuated by Squamish Search & Rescue, again using a B.C. Rail speeder. -The provincial government plans to sell B.C. Rail. It is reported that one of the possible buyers may discontinue rail service in this area, and eventually remove the tracks. -The intertidal area in front of the Malemute is being filled in, part of the expansion of the log sort. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B.C. Rail has placed three metal signs at the lower Malemute. One is on a post where the trail leads onto the tracks. The second is bolted on at the base of Clean Crack, and the third is bolted on near the base of Hand Jive. The signs say "No Trespassing. Trespassing on Railway Property is Illegal and Extremely Dangerous. Trespassers will be Prosecuted."

Yes indeed, I know locals have been climbing there this year fairly regularly. My position is that there is lots of other climbing (come on it's Squamish for crying our loud) that isn't under access restrictions that for the chance that it might permanently damage access to these areas it isn't worth it for me to climb there. Plus bad form to be in a restricted area and then need a rescue, eh? Paul
