Has anyone climbed at Peavine Island on the Susquehanna? How big is the rock and is it bolted? Also, do you have to swim to it or is there a way to get there dry? I think I may have to wander out there and check it out. -adam

You can get to all of the areas and remain dry, even when the Holtwood Dam is at high-flow. There are a few short bolted lines on a face, "The Shield Wall". The grades are short and steep, only a few bolts long. There's also another bolted route, on the south end of the island, called "The Dark Room". (See the PA routes on this site) Please keep in mind some of these bolts were placed 10-15 years ago; some of them are beginning to appear questionable. The routes were established mainly by a group of climbers from Maryland. One of them, "Ed", used to have Peavine info on nobeta.com

Unless you are close by - and perhaps not even then - it's not worth the trip. Most of the routes are 12-18 feet long; I'm not exaggerating.

I completely disagree. THis place is awesome, especially the holtwood pothole, AKA "the dark room". 6 bolts up an overhanging glacial pothole!
