I’m a relative newbie climber & after climbing at a gym for about 3 hours in new shoes the back of my toenails on my big toes are bruised. My shoes don’t seem uncomfortably tight & they’re unlined (5-10 Spires), so they should stretch a bit. My theory is that the bruising is from the pressure of the climbing holds on my toes. Does anyone have any experience with this type of bruising?

are your toenails too long?..... that could cause it because the nail would be what hits the wall (especially when new to the sport) and would get pushed back causing bruises where you say your getting them.... just a thought.

Maybe try on some different types of shoes....brands, sizes, whatever. Although i have never had bruised toenails, my feet have degraded in appearance over the past year since I started climbing. I prefer a really tight fit with my shoes, and therefore, I'm paying the price you might say. As far as the pressure of the holds doing this to your feet, I find it more comfortable while my feet are on holds rather than just standing on them flat ground. Experiment, and you'll eventually find a shoe that fits and performs to your liking. Good luck!

The same thing happened to me the first time I wore my climbing shoes. That was eight months ago and the bruises have not grown out all the way yet. If there's pain, it will go away after a while. The only thing you can do is cut your nails short and wait for them to grow out. Peace, Jeff

Thanks for the input. I have had bruises before from backpacking & attributed that to repeated impact. The pain lasted about a week, but it's gone now. I'll pay more attention to what's going on with my feet & shoe fit & see what happens.

I bought some of those 5 dollar shoe stretcher's which you can get at any store and used those on some 5.10 V10's and it helped a lot.

I haven't had it happen with climbing shoes, but I have had exactly the same kind of brusing caused by Telli ski boots. Make sure the shoe isn't pinching the top of the toe as you flex your foot. You may need to change brands if lace adjustment doesn't get it.
