when i started climbing you could only get big locking biners, now you can get small ones aswell....... what are the pros and cons of both ?????????? cheers joe

Gate opening. That's what it's all about. Biggies have a bigger gate that will let you get more through, like - double ropes etc. The biggies are also great for using a Munter hitch (mainly the pair shape). Presonaly, I like them much more. E

On the other hand, a few small lockers are handy to have as part of your anchor kit cause they are cheaper and lighter than biggies but still as safe.

I agree completely. If you're doin any wall-climbing some small lockers are invaluable. For anchors, for leading (If you've just really run it out and you need the peace of mind of a solid piece with a double-length runner. If I got one to spare I'll use it on the rope end.) The petzl locking ovals are nice for the wall-hauler. For setting up toprope anchors, I prefer to use locking D's back to back. Theyr'e cheaper and less cumbersome and are every bit as strong and reliable. If you're looking for something in between small and large, check out the Petzl attache. It's the smallest pear-shaped I'd belay with. I hope that helped! Layta!
