i was at the gym and some guy starts bashing me on how i chalk up. He's like "You dumper, get some techique, man!" he then told me i'm suppost to only dip my fingure tips in, and on the way out, wipe it off on the walls on the bag (or blow it, as the french do) is this guy a total nut? or does he know what he's talking about???

I vote for total nut!

I think I will be the first to honestly say, until I see a published book that says somethign to teh effect of "The Proper Ettiquette on Chalking Up." I will be doing whatever I damn well feel like. That is funny that "you were doing it wrong"

I hope you just dipped your hand again and then blew the exess off in his face. That would have been cool. I say don't worry about him. Even when that book is published...I will still do what I want...only cause that is also how I live my life...doing what I want. Chalk On!

I say do whatever you want! That guy was probably just one of those guys that think that their way is the right way...all the time!
It's just chalk, and it's probably going to get all over your hands by the time the day's done anyway!

haha, I had the same thought as Russman -- I would have blown some chalk in his face and said "Like that??" Anyway, I've never heard of a "correct" way to chalk up and if I did, I would laugh at it. Do what feels right. I personally don't like having a lot of chalk all over my hands & I only use it when they start getting sweaty. Then I blow or wipe off the excess. But whatever!

Chalk is a waste of time, in my opinion. I rarely use the stuff.

But I can kind of agree with only chalking your fingers. There isn't really a point of having the back of your hand chalky...unless you like the feeling, then by all means, chalk it up hardcore.

I've got a problem with people who chalk up too much. I carry a toothbrush because people can really overdo it on holds. I apply just enough on my fingers to suck up sweat and keep me sticking on. I know lots of people like to pack it on, but really - can it do that much good? Chalk really doesn't help climbing ability unless you're slipping from sweat.

I have a chalk ball in my bag to make it easy to get it only on the fingers and not "the back of the hand" , But I do think that if you are on a face at about 300 feet you are not nessicarilly goign to worry about only getting yoru fingertips and if you dip your hand in the bag and it gets everywhere...At least I din't fall.

Yes, I may need to clean the holds on my wall, but that is much easier than haveing to heal from a fall and not getting to climb due to the fact that I didn't have enough chalk to mop up the sweat.

My thoughts Everyone enjoy Prince and the NPG!

Fingers? What about the palm!!! Aren't your palms the place where you sweat from most? And if you are a sweater around the backs of your hands, put some on there too. Chalk is about keeping your hands dry... I say chalk it all, don't take a chance at falling off an attempt at onsight, redpoint, or flash because your hands are sweaty.

I would say the only person who might have any place to criticize your chalking style might be your belayer. I don't know about anyone else but when i end up with chalk snowing down on me from my climber i'm not all that happy, especially when it gets in my eyes as i'm trying to watch them.

The Guy sounds like a Butt Nut to me.

My vote would have been to spit in his face insted of blowing chalk in his face, And see what plays out.

The proper "technique" for chalking the hands is as follows.Dip the right hand in to the second knuckle, swirling the fingers in a countrclockwise direction, then raise your hand over and to the left and shake while blowing the excess off.Procced with the left in opposite direction.
Like there is really a proper way to chalk! I have read numberous books and have seen a few videos and have yet to hear of anything of a proper technique.
As long as it works for you,do it.
I sometimes think that it's also a mental thing for me to dip, swirl, and blow.Kind of a psycological boost.Maybe I'm wierd, but who cares anyhow?
Mitch
How do I upgrade from "belayer"?

I personaly chalk up to my wrists.

Probably because I climb a lot of hand cracks and I seldom use tape.

As for chalk landing in my eyes while belaying, well....

I have been hit by rocks, flakes, ice, a ton of dirt, pitons and gear in general. I don't think a little chalk would faze me.

Cheers, Ammon

i think that guy is a nut!!!
i would say that there isn't a rule of thumb for chalking-up!
there are ppl who tend to have very sweaty palms/fingers and also the others who dun seem to palm/finger sweat at all! so chalking-up differs for everyone!

palms do sweat for most people, so the guy evidently doesn't climb on slopers. he'll be fine on a crimper but give him a problem where you're trying to get as much surface fiction going on as possible and he'll rethink his statement.

It does not matter! What ever amount of chalk you feel most comfortable in using, then that's the amount you will use.

My vote: Total Nut Case!

I don't think they were calling you a nut case -- they were referring to the guy who called Beyond_Gravity a dumper.
