I'm just starting to climb trad. routes, and I just read that you never clip a bent gate directly to protection. When should I use a bent gate and straight gate?

It is common knowledge bent gates can open if they are twisted in the right (or wrong) way. I have never had this happen myself, but it is still a good rule NEVER to clip your bent gate into a piece of pro (be it removable or a bolt)..

Bent gates, correct me if I'm wrong, were designed for pumpy sport routes that require quick, easy clipping of the biner ONTO THE ROPE. So, I suppose that you can use them for trad routes when clipping into your rope only. I still try to stay away from them unless I absolutely cannot clip into a straight gate on a route.

Okay, you're wrong. It is acceptable to use a bent-gate biner on slung gear, such as cams. Bent-gate biners should not be used to clip bolts because the bent gate more easily catches on the hangar than a straight gate.

All of my runner have bent gates on one side and straight gates on the other. The straight gate is for either bolts or the pro the bent gate is strictly for the rope. I think its my own personal ritual for my climbing. It takes me to my happy place.
