I'm living on Kadena AFB for a couple of months, and I want to do some climbing on the island while I'm here. It's probably too much to hope for, but I'm looking for someone who knows their way around, and has most of the necessary equipment. I brought my harness/shoes/chalkbag/belay device, but that's it.

There is a crappy climbing gym in Okinawa City near you. You might be able to meet up with some english speaking climbers there. The place is called Yamaacha climbing gym I think. It's basically an old run down building with holds attached to the cement walls, but it does have a decent bouldering area. They sell some gear there too. Good luck.

I haven't been down there to climb, although I've heard a bit from Japanese friends. Mostly boulders; VERY sharp rock. In any event, I googled around a little bit, so here are some sites, in case you haven't yet seen them. First, here's the English language web page for the gym (including a map): http://www.yama-accha.com/5.html Next, here are a bunch of sites about climbing in Okinawa (some sites in English, some in Japanese, some a mixture): http://www.camp4.com/fiction.php?newsid=405 http://www.coralrockokinawa.com/ http://japanupdate.com/previous/00/12/21/story16.shtml http://www.outdoorjapan.com/rockclimbing/activity-rc-okinawa.html http://www.climber.idv.tw/~y17/okinawa-1.htm Hope you find some rock, and if you're headed for Tokyo anytime, let me know.
