Hey, im just really curious about how competitions are judged... like is it based on speed? or difficulty? or style? ..or if someone makes it without falling? ...or what?... i want to know so that i could get an idea of how to hold a climbing competition at my high school... so for those of you who know how a comp works... PLEASE EXPLAIN

http://www.rockcomps.com/rockcomps/comps/formats.cfm that should help....give u an idea of the different formats that are often used. Of course there is also speed climbing comps but i don't really know anything about those. Also as far as i know there isn't any sort of "style" comp but someone on here who knows more than i do may know otherwise.

if its a high wall, go for difficulty. you could even do it on top rope for more security. if you have a bouldering cave, make a bouldering comp.

agreed....set a whole bunch of routes varying in difficulty (important that everyone can enjoy some of the routes) if you have a whole bunch of people you could divide it into different ability levels and even break it down by gender too. My school's comp does girls and guys division and within that we have beginner and advanced. Then just use some spreadsheet program to make up a score card that keeps track of routes completed and number of attempts to complete. Grab some belayers and you are all set, and hopefully some prizes too.
