Specifically, what stretches do you do? Just the run-of-the-mill major muscle stretches, or some keen Yoga-like maneuvers? p.s.- what are "French" pull-ups?

Before I climb I do an excercise to get my blood flowing good, then I stretch my hamstrings, quads, groin muscles, forearms, lats, and pectoral muscles. It's the only way to prevent injury. -sONofSpORk

There is a stretch I do that is great for climbing and I've never seen anyone else using it. It was taught to me by a physical therapist when I was rehabbing from a repetitive stress thumb injury. She called it a "nerve" stretch. Kind of hard to describe but I'll try. (If I get some time I'll submit a photo of myself doing it.) Stand in relaxed, good posture pose, with your right side about arms length from a wall. Lift your arm up until it is perfectly parallel to the ground (shoulder height) and try to place your palm flat against the wall, thumb up. NO twisting any part of your body, only your arm should have moved. Most climbers cannot do this because they are so tight thru the hand and forarm. So at the beginning, walk your palm back on the wall behind your body, still keeping it parallel to the floor. Make sure you keep you trunk in proper position. Over time you will be able to get it so that the arm is right in line. At this point, get added stretch by bending your left ear towards your left shoulder. Repeat the above for the left side.

There is an article (look to the left of the screen in the tool bar for "Articles") about improving finger strength, and so forth. within this article, there are some great pictures of where you should stretch before training. i use these same stretches before I climb, and havent pulled a muscle since. matt

RayJay, thanks for those variations. They sound good. I agree with what you said about stretching. I stretch and ice religiously! I'm also a big fan of cross-training to prevent injury.

I stretch, and stretching is always good for your body! I think the run of the mill stretching is great! but I have a climbing friend who does some yoga. Keep on stretching and be healthy.
