Well, it finally happened... Any hope I ever had of wearing open toed shoes in the near future is gone. Just when I thought my feet couldn't get uglier, my big toe nail fell off! I've posted often about my bruised and ugly climbing toes and have been advised by many of you to take a box cutter to ithem or yank my big toenails off after a hot shower. I didn't have the guts to do any of this. I'm a wimp, afterall. This weekend I took a work trip to Montana and accidentally found a painless solution. Before our conference, my coworkers and I decided to do some sight seeing in Yellowstone and were really excited about taking a dip in the boiling river. This is a river that has a hot spring flowing into it, and it actually feels hot and cold at the same time and is really neato. So I soaked in the Boiling River for a while and when I decided to get out I had to walk upstream against the current. As I was walking, I started to feel my toenail start to wiggle around and my stomach start to turn (I get grossed out easily). I reached down to grab my foot to feel just exactly what was happening, and just then the current lifted my toenail off my toe and into my hand! Because I believe in leaving no trace, I tucked it away in my fleece pocket and tried to keep my cool. I was so afraid to look at it! But I work with a bunch of nurses and health care professionals who told me it was no big deal. One of them even suggested that I keep the toenail and tape it on in the case that I needed support while climbing. Yeah right! I couldn't even look at it, never mind carry it around as a memento! So anyway, that's my toenail story. It was quick, painless, and a little embarassing in front of my colleagues. Now I just have to wait for the other one to come off! Maybe the next time I'm in Montana I'll go to the Boiling River again!

Yuck - you don't want to see... trust me! When I finally had the stomach to look I realized there is a little black mutant new toenail that was growing underneath. I think I already injured it somehow! Oddly enough, this is not the first request for a picture of my feet. Why is that? I could turn off any foot fetish freaks out there with one glimpse of my piggies! But maybe it would be fun to gross the climbing community out!

I had a buddy in college that was a ski racer. Every winter he lost his big toenail after it turned black from being crammed into too tight ski boots. but every year it grew back. I nearly hurled every time he showed me... in fact, I'm feeling a bit sea sick right now.....

Ill third the "gotta see a pic". I have had to have chunks of my toenail removed and the doc put some acid in the corner after he tore the chunk of nail out to keep it from growing back. Your nail will return and it will probably look pretty gnarly until you beat it up again and kill the bed, hence another trip to the Boiling River

In reply to: Yuck - you don't want to see... trust me! But maybe it would be fun to gross the climbing community out! I wanna see too. It reminds me of the time I was walking a friend out down the hallway in the house I live in, and my big toenail hit the heel of his shoe and off it came. I didn't even have anything wrong with it, but when it got caught on the rubber of the heel of his shoe as he lifted his foot, *BAM* no more toenail. It has grown back fine. It taught me the value of not neglecting keeping my toenails trimmed. Then there was that friend that had to have his toenail removed because it was ingrown. I saw his toe not long after surgery.

Okay, I give! I had blueeyedclimber take a digital pic of my ugly toe last night. As soon as he emails it to me, I will figure out how to post it. However, the pic looked blurry to me and does not give true justice to just how gruesome it truly is.

All right, I took a picture of it and hopefully it will be up soon. Personally, I didn't think it was that bad and I don't know what all the fuss is about. I think you guys are all freaks. Just dont' get too excited when you see it. Josh

No, it makes a better impression in person. But I submitted it and it says that it will be approved in 24 - 48 hrs. In the meantime, anyone else have ugly toe pics they want to post. There seems to be a high demand for ugly toe pictures in this forum. :?

Nope, sorry. Aside from being rather stinky at times, I think I have quite pretty toes.
