Just arrived to the Albuqurque region and will be here through the winter. I'd love to get on some climbs in the Sandias (or other) but don't know much about the area, nor the climate (other than what I read in the guide books). Given the shorter and colder days, is it possible or quicker to park a vehicle at the peak (Sandia Crest) and hike or rap down safely to get a couple of pitches in? I'm a 5.8 trad climber, 5.10 sport and follow up to 5.11s. Anyone interested in getting out to climb (trad, sport, boulder or gym), call or send me a message. I've got gear, transportation and a very flexible schedule. Johnny 727-644-4615 jlayani@hotmail.com

I tried doing the sheild last Thanksgiving. It almost worked. Well, maybe not almost, but I tried! What an epic. There are a few climbs down near the bottom of the La Luz trail. They are nothing great, but it is low enough you can climb there when the top is frozen. School House Rock is the only one I can think of.
