Hey all,
I am considering going to WV for Nov 27-30 if the weather is good and i can find a partner or two. If anyone else wants to celebrate the discovery of the "new world" with a little bit of climbing post up. Perhaps we can even have ourself a little get together down there.

I was thinking of doing the same thing for the beginning of that week (something like nov. 22-25). I'd stay the week, but my family wants me home for thanksgiving. It would be great to hook up with some new climbers down there, and if you know the area that's even better.

Don't go. Seneca sucks. Nothing but stellar routes on beautiful, gleaming quartzite. Dead vertical, heart-in-your-throat exposure at basically all grades. You have to walk for at LEAST 8-10 minutes to climb AND you have to scramble up some rocks to get to anything. A few of the ~400 routes aren't even worth doing.

It's a choss pile. Utter crap.

So, when are you getting in?

Rob

well rob...if you really dont like seneca you can always go down the road to nelson. ;) It depends on when I have climbing partners. Seeing as christmas is right around the corner I dont think my family will mind me missing thanksgiving. But I may drive down thur night anyway. Ideally I will drive down wens night after work and climb thur, fri , sat and maybe a little sun morning before driving back. All depends on the weather though. NRG is only a few hourse south, so The options are nearly limitless. And Kimmy...what else could you possibly be doing that would be more fun than driving 8 hrs to scare yourself silly on a big piece of rock with a bunch of people whos goal in life is to be homeless and jobless. But if for some silly reason you wanted to go anyway the route to WV could easily go through eastern PA if anyone in that neck of the woods happened to need a ride. If people are worried about missing thanksgiving dinner( the meal, not the family part) im sure we could whip something up in the campground and have ourselves a feast. Cooking pies in a dutch oven is realtivly easy ;).

It does get dark at 5 these days, so if people didnt mind eating thanksgiving dinner kinda late we could probably work something out. Hmmm, we just might need alot of wine for this. Lets see..Pies are easy to get, veggies all come in cans, We could get turkey pieces instead of a whole one. I like it, I like it alot. :D

This sounds great, I just got back from seneca but would like to go again. One thing to keep in mind is Seneca Shadows closed last Sunday, not sure about the other campground there, beeter check that out before you all go. I just might see you there.

You're right, Rob. Wouldn't want to go there at all. Sounds no fun. *GRIN*. I'd much rather be spending my time getting teased by my two older brothers and eating too much. It seems that one Gathering may just lead to another.... And here, I thought this whole climbing thing only took place in the warmer months. You guys bring the grub and I'll bring the wine.

:P :P

just make sure you leave that "prob-u-lator" at home. Mixing wine and things like that could have disaterous results

With enough wine, they're all warmer months.

I am tentatively in. being in the military I don't have that much leave to go home for both holidays. I would like to go, I just have to wait on two things. I probably won't have a boyfriend after tonight and that would cancel dinner with his parents, and then me and my roomate were going to put together a dinner for the marines at his barracks that can't go home. pencil me in. I will keep yall posted. great idea though, just remember it will be colder than.....well freaking hella cold.

very true rob, and we can climb in the sun ALL day because (its going to be sunny) seneca has climbing on both the east and the west face :D. Just remember to bring your puffy belay jackets and you should be all set.

hm, an interesting thought. i usually go to franklin (seneca) on thanksgiving to go caving, but climbing would be good if it's warmer than normal, and i did just acquire a seneca rocks guidebook. hmm, tempting. i could go wednesday night and come back saturday. i have to work sunday. gotta ponder the logistics on that one. snowbird is a good place to camp all year round. oh yeah, speaking from experience, if you go hiking, wear orange and watch out for deer hunters!

Well...people seem to actually think this is a good idea. I guess it kinda depends on if its gonna rain or snow the whole time. but if its not, we should defiantly do something. keep it in the back of your minds and as we get closer we shall see how the weather holds out. If things look good im willing to do a little organizing.

cruz- seneca is all trad, some TRing but not too much. If you have never done any multi pitch trad you would need to find someone who would be willing to take you out on some easy stuff and show you the ropes( pun intended). There are lots of cool people here and im sure you could find someone or a few people who would be willing to teach you. This goes for anyone thats new to trad and might be interested in going.

Cept me. I'm a right bastard.

You'll need a full trad rack (stoppers, hexes--and not those newfangled wired things, neither!, TCUs, camalots, and tri cams). Assorted slings and runners, 1'-5', biners for all. 2 ropes. Harness, shoes, lockers, chalkbag--well, maybe not in November. Belay device, of course. Solo belay device for versatility. Just bring a check for $2,000 or so and the Gendarme'll set you up.You'll probably even have enough money left over for a t shirt or two. Maybe even food.If you eat cheap.

Oh. And balls of steel. Not sold separately.

seems like this may become something. lets see what the weather brings. i imagine i could roast a turkey on the grill. (yes, i can cook). if there will be enough people, i would be interested in spending t day with climbers rather than a sister and brother in law. can camp at snowbird. for all those interested, drop me a line.
