Its in the Great Smokey Mtns National Park. Its actually on the Tennessee side. There is an observation platform at the top of a paved hiking trail. There are a lot of rock faces and boulders throughtout the park but to my knowledge there isn't any climbing. The nearest climbing areas would be Whitesides or Looking Glass. Hope this helps.

There is cliimbing in the Great Smoky Mountains... ask at The Happy Hiker in Gatlinburgh, and if your in there on the day they are feeling happy then they will tell you. This place is supper secret and only trad routes and bouldering exist.

Clingmans Dome is the highest peak in the Appalachian Mountains. If you are looking for backpacking it is a good way of jumping onto the Appalachian trail during the summer. During the Winter Clingman's Dome road is closed and alot of the time you will get stuck inside the gates of HWY 411. Worst yet, you can get stuck outside the gates and have to hike an extra 20 miles to get to your destination. Get out is easy, getting in can be a bi-ch. They usually get the most snow in March... or at least that is my expereince with it, not science or data. If you need anymore info on the appalachian trail or the Smoky Mountains in general please PM me or go through my email at Hotmail.

P.S. The picture on my profile is from the summit of Chimney Tops in the Smoky Mountains. If you have some extra time, I suggest you bag this peak. Take at least 2 rolls of film, half day worth of food and water. Just look at the picture, you will see what I mean.

Best time to hike it is in the winter when the crowds are small. You will still see the unprepared hike halfway up this trail in t-shirts with kids running ahead of them. This is no place to take your kids...

Actually, Mt Mitchell, a few miles to the east, is the highest peak in the Appalachians, not Clingman's. Clingman's is the highest point in Tennessee, as well as the highest point on the Appalchian Trail. That ridge crest is essentially the NC / TN line all the way through the Smokies.
