Definately the Black Hills... the rest of the state is a flat, boring wasteland when it comes to climbing...

temps around here this week are going to be hovering in the mid-40's... but there's a couple of places that get good sun on cloudless days...

1. Falling Rock just west of Rapid City on Highway 44... The North Rim has some good climbs on steep limestone cliffs, and i was just out there yesterday and the snow has melted off the rim and at the base... the sun hits it from about 10:00 to 3:00... climbs range from 5.7 to 5.11c...

2. An even better place to climb would be the Sunshine Wall in Spearfish Canyon outside of the town of Spearfish... this is also limestone, but has much better climbing quality and many more routes than Falling Rock... climbs range from 5.8 to around 5.13, and there's a lot of kick-ass 5.10's and 11's here... as the name implies, it gets a LOT of sun as it is a south-facing cliff high in the canyon...

there are guidebooks available for both areas at Adventure Sport in Rapid City...

Both are primarily sport areas and are your best bet for winter climbing in the Hills... either place will seem warmer than the air temps if it's sunny...

Indoors, there is a descent climbing gym just outside of Rapid City on Sheridan Lake Road... i think it's at a gym called the Recreation Center...

if you need any more info feel free to P.M. me...

cheers,
brad

If you are in Souix Falls, you are not too far from Luverne, MN (about 1/2 hour). Blue Mounds is a few miles north of Luverne, it is a state park and there is climbing there.

Have fun

Go to Spearfish, Its a very beautiful canyon..you will have a blast there. I just picked up the guidebook and it looks like there is quite a bit for every level climber.

Cool! Thanks alot for the info guys. I am not quite sure where I am going when I get there (I am delivering a truck to someone up there, and I will find out later tonight where exactly he lives), but I think I will go try Spearfish Canyon. Sounds pretty good. If anyone is available to go with me and show me some stuff that would be great. I will pm you guys. Thanks alot!

Black Hills is where you want to be. At this time of the year your best chances are gonna be at sunshine wall.
If the weather gets pretty sketchy head to the Athletic Club on Sheridan Lake Road, its the only decent indoor wall near Rapid area and they only charge 5 dollars.
Good luck,
Tim

The Athletic Club... that's what it's called... thanks, Tim... I haven't been there in probably a year, but i remember it being decent... a good place to go as a last resort, and there can be a lot of "last resorts" around here in the winter...
