One boulder problem I'm working on at the moment has a tough mantle and I was after some tips on how to climb mantles.
Thanks.

Commit to it... Once you get your hips (center of gravity) past your hand/hands, you've got it made. Some people fail to commit to it, and never get their hips over.

Hips and body tension, that's the key.

And putting more weight on your hands as your hips move higher up.

Here's a tip:

Spell "MANTEL" correctly!

Sheesh.

[Hint: Think "mantelshelf" as in "above fireplace." Look, even Duane Raleigh can be trained. After endless emails from me, his magazine now spells it correctly most of the time.]

If its not an overhang, or if it is hopefully a small one, try doing a real quick smear with your shoes. It can give you a little relief of your hands. On one of the mantel's at my local crag i put my hands in a good position pulled up and then quickly smeared each one of my feet on the wall. Gave me a little push

Fair enough PTPPete, but "mantelshelf" as in "above the fireplace" is not exactly in common usage in a city where it rarely gets below 10 degrees C!

But... M A N T E L. Will I be able to climb it now Dr Piton?

There are some good tips about mantel moves in "How to Rock Climb" by John Long. It also has a lot of other great information. You can find a used copy at half.com.
