I just got a pop up from a company advertising on rc.com, now i know the site needs to make $$$ to run, but one of the nice things about rc.com, and one of the things that i hate the most are pop ups from unsolicited third parties....... :x thoughts?

Yes, it is true, we have pop-ups... But, this is a free site, and the $$$ has to come from somewhere...  As I understand, though, you will only get each ad ONCE a day, usually the first time you log on... 8) MUCH better than every page you click, like some NEWS sites and the like.

Download youself a copy of mozilla. Built in popup wreckifying. I never see popups unless I specifically request them (like clicking on a link that's designed to pop something up). I did, however, notice that the little icon in the status bar that tells you when a popup has been blocked was there when I checked posts here this morning. Didn't even give it a second thought really, until now.

Hmmm... last I checked it cost nothing to use RC.com... not only do you browse for free, but now you're actually complaining that, heaven forbid, the owners might actually be trying cover the costs of running the site... sheesh, you mean they don't make enough from all those donations pouring in??? come off it... really... it's a FREE SITE!!! if a few pop-ups bother you that much, you're probably better off somewhere else...

Popups are unacceptable, even on a free site. Free sites like sourceforge.net don't spam you with popups; why should rc.com get away with it? Not to mention that they are ineffective: like many others, I use software (mozilla) which blocks them. And by virtue of the fact that it was advertised through popups, I would never buy such a product or click on such an ad.

Guys, this isn't a big deal. RC.com needs the money. There are 2 solutions. Donate to the site. Accept the popups. Of course, solution number 2 is as simple as downloading Mozilla: Firebird, which already COMES with a popup blocker. Not only that its f-f-f-f--faster. Thats the best of both worlds. RC.com gets their much needed money, and you get your pop-up free surfing. Oh, but still donate.

In reply to: There are 2 solutions. Donate to the site. Accept the popups. Why donate? This site doesn't provide any service that cannot be obtained for free (rec.climbing will remain the better resource for the foreseable future)... They only have to pay costs for hosting and time to make small modifications to phpbb code---pretty damn minimal. All the moderation is done by volunteers, not paid employees. Lots of people run sites (including rc.com-style things with climbing fora) and pay these costs without trying to make money on them. Not to mention the childish censorship that you would be supporting by donating...

Spot the guy with no idea how much it costs to get the bandwidth to support the traffic that rc.com gets. Next thing you know we'll be back to having people suggest that the site be hosted off a cable modem.

They only have to pay costs for hosting and time to make small modifications to phpbb code---pretty damn minimal. A) rec.climbing has nearly nothing of the features this site does. they have kidna the forums, but it's a non binary newsgroup, so no pictures. No databases, no gear reviews, and no articles are easily searchable and acessible. And newsgroups arent free. Your paying for that bandwidth with your monthly ISP charge. Someone has to pay for it. You jsut dont see it becuase it's all lumped into one payment. B) hosting is friggin expensive when youve actually got decent traffic. How many people do you think upload, download, and view pictures every day? how many articles are posted and viewed every day? It may all seem like pennies, but it ads up to dollars. On top of that, you have to pay for storage and hosting. I'd be curious to find out how much space this site actually uses. I'm sure it's quite a bit. Hostnames arent free either. Running a site like this isn't cheap, especially when people have lives other than this site. Jobs, houses, gear addictions, cars, etc.

DO you HONESTLY believe that running a website is free? Especially a website that sees this kind of traffic, as well as the amount of bandwith used for photos, etc. rec.climbing is an unorganized pile of dogcrap. and it STILL isnt free.

In reply to: Popups are unacceptable, even on a free site. Not only is that a decision for the people who actually pay the hardware and bandwidth costs, it's also one that you can remain blissfully unaware of by using a value-added popup blocker, or a better browser. Here are several that don't show up weekly on BugTraq: http://toolbar.google.com/ http://www.mozilla.org/ http://www.opera.com/ With the Google Toolbar you don't even need to switch browsers. Installaton takes all of 30 seconds, and I routinely add it to browsers at Kinko's, internet cafes, and libraries. No one has ever complained once. I'm not in favor of pop-ups, but if they allow the site to develop and offset costs like giving free advertising to the Access Fund or ASCA, what exactly is the reasoning behind your argument? Note that VA Software now sells Sourceforge as a proprietary product, after using plenty of community testing and a freely-available codebase to develop it. Hardly a shining example of corporate ethics in their own right (and this from a publicly traded company with numerous shareholder lawsuits pending). I am in favor of whatever will allow rc.com to best serve the community over the long term, and I have a lot more at stake here than you do.

quit being whiny cunts about the popups. if you don't like them, leave. no one's forcing you to visit the site. and rockclimbing.com is miles ahead of rec.climbing in terms of everything it has to offer. fuckin' losers. go bugger off...

tim's post below is spot on, there's no arguing it. that is why i can't complain about them (not that they bother me in the least anyway) but i will say that i'm not checking this site at work any more...
