In reply to: Camp four man- glorious camp 4 :D What he said. If you're not putting up a tent just throw down at a less populated site and bivy there, you'll save yourself the $5 a night campsite fee. If you REALLY wanna bivy somewhere sweet, hike on up to the base of El Cap, there's a nice flat area near Mescalito/New Dawn area. It's a hella cool way to fall asleep with the stars overhead being overcut by the vastness of El Cap. You can park your car down at the meadow and it'll be fine, the hike up isn't bad. And waking up to the morning light as it starts to come across the Captain is something spiritual.

there's a big fancy hotel next to a cute little lodge with condos in fish camp at the south end of the park. I stayed at one of the condos. It was nice, had a pool, hot tub, and you can wander over to that big hotel and eat food and go to the bar when the day is done. Either that or you could just pitch a tent anyplace out of sight of the road.

Not to mention it's not legal. Any camping that's not within the parameters of one of the campsites is technically illegal unless you're sleeping on the wall. Now, this doesn't stop people from finding a discrete out of bounds spot, but just be aware that the Rangers will hassel you if they find you. Dirt-bagging it at Camp 4 and low key, intimate, private out of bounds camping locations are a necessary part of anyone's initiation to the climbing experience in Yosemite. Just be aware of the consequences. And the bears. (are they hibernating yet?) Ed

In reply to: Just be aware of the consequences. And the bears. (are they hibernating yet?) And the fact that with the cold weather setting it, the Rangers have more time to read rockclimbing.com during the day. Think low profile... Gene's point about ice sheets wacking you when the sun comes up and melts them off is a good one. Sleep somewhere protected if you do go up there.

I slept up at the base a number of times this summer when it was nice and warm and the tool could actually exit their vehicles without getting cold, and never saw a ranger up there once. No way would they bother at this time of year. In Camp 4 however, there's a constant Tool presence. Not like they spend all their time hassling those who are bivying, cause they're too busy looking for anyone smoking weed or leaving food in their vehicles so they can tow them. I just mentioned the base cause of how beautiful and serene it is up there. Best night's sleep ever. And even though Camp 4 is definitely fun, sometimes the scene gets a little much and the base is a nice peaceful respite from the partying down at camp.

In reply to: Do the words you are going to freeze your a!@ off mean anything to you?  do the words - find someone who lives in el portal and is willing to lend you some floor space and then climb with you for the length of your stay all day everyday mean anything to you?? i guess i am entitled to luck out every now and then! even had salmon for dinner last night! seriously, am having a sweet time of it here - got a bit chilly today, but the sun has been shining and days spent on the cookie and reeds are finding no complaints from me! They have been threatening snow all week, but still nothing, is looking more likely tho as it was really rolling in today. getting ready. What a stellar place! :D

And I thought I had a big mouth... Sleeping at the base of El Cap is DEATH! There is one place that is protected from ice/rockfall but you will be hassled by a skunk all night long. Sleep in Camp 4 and pay your $5.

If you don't want to camp, stay at the Yosemite Bug youth hostel. I haven't stayed there, but have stopped for a great dinner and brews, and my friends who have stayed there say it's fine. All different price ranges. Check em out online.
