Anyone know what years the rounded Peck nuts were manufactured? Have some from my father, he's not sure when he got them (climbed '54-'70s). I found one in a crack on Cathedral Peak, and a friend of mine just bootied one off of an old anchor on an aid route in Pine Creek (Bishop area). The one my friend bootied is wired, while one the same size from my father's old gear is slung with a cord.

Yeah, I saw those once upon a time and was like, "I don't know if I ever want my nuts in coffee." Mine are kind of crusty from Moab sandstone. I like smooth warm drinks. : P

I've got a couple of the smallest ones that I picked up around 70. They predate stoppers and hexentrics. There are some spots they provide bomber pro when nothing else works as well. (crux move on whodunit for example) When ever I use one seconds are warned about the peril of leaving it behind.

In reply to: I've got a couple of the smallest ones that I picked up around 70. They predate stoppers and hexentrics. There are some spots they provide bomber pro when nothing else works as well. Pecks indeed look quite burly. When were hexes available? I thought around '69 or so. Surely by 71? Brian in SLC

Peck nuts may have been introduced in Britain in '64, but I don't think any significant number of climbers in this country used nuts until '68 or '69. The seminal event was an article in Summit magazine by Royal Robbins entitled Nuts to You. Robbins returned from a trip to England enthused about the protection possibilities of nuts and wrote about them in that article. We all rushed out to get some; at the time you sent (I think) $15 to Joe Brown in Wales and back came a small box of assorted nuts and webbing to sling them on. (No wire slings, they came later.) The collection included some Pecks, and this is probably when they appeared in this country.

According to the 72 Chouinard Catalouge Hexentrics came out in 71 and stoppers in 72. Not sure on the history of MOACs. Never saw many of them around here, (So Cal) I remember Robbins article. That, and Mountain magazine inspired experments with home made nuts I'm lucky to have lived through.
