This is unbelievable. Kurt's three year partner and supposed friend, Mel Guitierrez has kicked Kurt and Elena out of Rancho Cerro Gordo. I don't know all the details, but Kurt wanted me to get the word out as soon as possible. Kurt and Elena are trying to get out of there today. Hopefully they get out safely.

Mel is laughably claiming that the entire business is his and nothing belongs to Kurt and Elaina. Of course, Kurt and Elaina built the entire place and used their funds to continually upgrade it. They are also the ones who traveled the world promoting it as well as the ones paying for the website etc. Their so called friend Mel is now taking their entire business away from them or at least trying to do so. Mel is threatening to have them arrested as well as sue them. They are currently seeking legal counsel in Mexico and Kurt will be writing up a detailed account of what exactly is happening to them once it is all resolved. In the meantime, we strongly urge those wishing to come to El Potrero Chico to stay away from Rancho Cerro Gordo as it is currently being run by two-faced thieves and cheats that are a disgrace to the human race and the mexican people especially. It's amazing what ignorance and greed will do to the common man.

i just want to mention that for anyone intending to go to potrero chico, please still go!
I was there in december and it's incredible climbing. you don't have to stay at cerro gordo (which was a little too "we claim this land as north american" for my tastes...)
There are a number of other places that offer accomodations comparable to cerro gordo. The place I stayed at was quinta la pagoda and was friendly and clean. Mind you, these other places are run by mexicans, with no american investors that you can tell of. (in case that's an issue to you or something)
sorry to hear of kurt's business loss, but the rock remains, and it's an amazing place!!!

Stay at Homero's. Not as fancy, but you and your gear will feel safe there.

The Posada (big Orange sign on the left side of the road into the Canyon) is fantastic. We stayed there for 10 days at Christmas, Great indoor Kitchen Facilities (3 gas stoves, 2 fridges, drinkable water, 3 sinks), fantasitc washroom facilities (4-8 showers, 4-8 toilets for men and women EACH).
Not a big party place, no drugs allowed if that's your thing, but a Primo spot to get a good nights sleep and a meal.
Louis take care of his partons too. I don't know how many times he went out of his way to make us comfortable.

also im sorry for the mass mailed letter but i need to email about 300
people today and tell our story....
we have had many problems with mel, his sister suzy and her husband valentin
(rcg taxi guy) over the years. they make deals with us in front of witnesses
and then reneg. they have committed many acts of fraud against us and stolen
the rancho. heres the quick version: (the whole story will be on our website
later)
we were in austin the last three weeks working to go on tour and raise money
for the access fund again. we left the rancho thinking all was well. we were
ready to return and build our house and raise a family in hidalgo. we
returned to our land with barbed wire on it and not the dimensions that i
bought and later was to be added (cause of the deal we made, the money i put
into fixing his house he was going to give me more land). then mel comes up
and we ask whats up? what happened to our deal? he says what deal? we say
the deal we made, fixed up your house for more land. he says no he paid for
the fix up its his house his rancho his business his casitas and get the
f--- off his land! at which that point he shows us the pistol in his pocket
and says pack your s--- and leave. suzy and him return an hour later and
threaten us again to leave by 10pm! the 12 people at the campground are
shocked and come to our aid and we move all our stuff to emilios in two
hours! then we return to the rancho to drop off our friends and drink beers
and have our last campfire together!
mel arrives at 10pm with the police and says we stole his stove, refrig,
boiler and water pump from the round house! we i bought that frig 5 years
ago while living at homeros. my mom bought that stove for our xmas present
and the boiler and pump i bought. he says we stole $5000 from deposito and
that the cops are coming back to put us in jail! well we were in asutin and
mel and tomas said mel collected the money and that was about $1200 and that
it is at mels house!
the next day we leave for monterrey, get a paper that says he cant put us in
jail and then talk with the us consulate and the best lawyer in all of
mexico. thsi woman makes jonny cochran look small time! anyway we are
fighting these accusations and taking him to court. they have been planning
this for at least three years and have committed many acts of federal fraud.
the first one being he has no papers for the whole rancho, that is federal
land and you are not allowed to sell it!
he has threatend ours and tomas life and mel, val and suzy will go to jail!
more info will come later. please do not go to the rancho! dont get in a
taxi driven by suzy, valentin, suzy jr. or valentin jr.!!!!
please tell everyone you know this story!
we still love mexico believe it or not! we have a lot of friends here and
many are coming to our aid right now! i still have a place in my heart for
the potrero and will return someday soon to be a climber and bolt again!!!!!

el potrero sigue abierto y seguira abierto para todos aquellos que quieran escalar sus hermosas paredes y es muy mal gusto decir verdades a medias de la gente de hidalgo, porque no cuentan toda la historia y se ponen en un plan de martir cuando su actitud durante su estancia en el potrero era bastante arrogante, y tambien cometieron fraudes con mel, como no entregarle cuentas correctas del dinero que se gastaba e ingresaba, asi como dejar a mel empeņado en los negocios de construccion de hidalgo, ademas de que por ser extranjero en mexico no tenias permiso para trabajar un servicio de hospedaje o camping. y cometiste el error de no hacer contratos escritos bajo las leyes mexicanas. mi chavo...
