Okay, I know this is way low on the totem compared to just about every other post on this forum, but I have a fairly painful problem that I'd like advice on: I made the problem of cutting my toenails too short, and then climbed around for a while, and now I have a quite painful ingrown toenail that *really* flares up when I try certain moves. (Usually when I do anything that presses the yop of my shoe on the injured toe.) Are there any remedies for taking care of ingrown toenails? It's frustrating when the rest of my body is eager to climb, but 1 toe is preventing me from doing so!

Hey, you can go to a fot doctor and he will take care of it. I did not when I was younger and had to have them cut the sides off on both sides and one toe and one side on the other. It hurts for awhile but in the long run it is worth not dealing with the pain. It makes your toenails look all small and funny though. If you do not want to do that though you can take a little piece of cotton ball and force it under that part of the toenail. Just keep adding to it until it is over the skin and grown out over the skin. This can be long and painful though. Good luck. don't stop the scream

I had an ingrown toenail operated on about 8 months ago. They basically numb your toe and after that take this cutting instrument and cut off half of your toenail. After the operation you have to take special care of the operated area for a few weeks. You will not be climbing for about a month or so because it hurts to put weight on the toe. After your are all better... no more problems!!! -sONofSpORk

Well, if you want to go on a NON surgery side then do what I do. I have been dealing with it on and off for a long time. I soak my foot (when it gets bad) in hot water (as hot as I can stand it, sometimes I have to bite a pillow to stop from screaming, good times, good times.) with epson salts in it. It works great. And cut your nails with a little v in the center, this causes the nails to grow more in teh center and less on teh sides (this is doctor advice, not just a wives tail) Gilthanass

In growns suck. I've had three, the last one being in December. Stub your toe and it friggin hurts. All three times I just let it keep growing untill it cut the skin enough to let me get tweezers in there. Nice big chug of scotch and then YANK OUCH. If you pull it off on the first try the pain relief is almost instant. This method is probably why it grew back twice though. The last time I fluked and it came off as a nice smooth corner. I hope it doesn't come back. My advice sucks. It will be alot less painfull if you see your doctor.

See a podiatrist and have the surgery if this is a recuring problem for you. I finally did after 13 years(!) of dealing with ingrown nails constantly. Your off of your feet for a week or two and no climbing for a while but when you return it is a whole new experience. If this is a one time or infrequent problem for you the hot water soak and cut method works pretty well.

If you do try to trim the nail to get it better, there is one thing that you need to know. There is usually a little "barb" piece of nail that gets stuck in the skin. After you trim the nail far enough, try to find the barb and if you find it, take a pair of tweezers or something and pull it out. -sONofSpORk

Seeing as how I have a re-occuring problem with ingrown toenails, I will post my experience with them. My first major ingrown was during cross country running season in high school. It got extremely bad, and I eventually had a doctor cut it out. Since then I have had a couple other major issues with ingrown nails. The most painful one didn't want to heal right, so I had to carefully trim underneath the skin because there was a barb that kept growing out to the side. It took a while, but it eventually healed up. Other times they weren't too deep, and I cut the barbs out before they got too inflamed. Make sure you don't just PULL out the barb. Try to trim it nicely so that there isn't a sharp edge left behind. Even the slightest edges can cause pain. If you can suck up the pain of pulling away the skin to get in deeper, you will be able to clean it better. If it gets infected, go to the doctor... One of my friends is really insane, and he actually does surgery on himself, with a knife... He did this for his sister too, hers was really bad, but she thanked him after the ordeal was done... If you don't mind blood and pain, this is an option you could try... good luck...

Also, it is very important that if there is any sign of infection you get to a doctor immediataly. The nail actually grows out of the toe deep down at the bone, if you get an infection there is a decent chance it will move down and infect the bone. VERY BAD! This can lead to amputation
