I'm going climbing in the You Yangs for my first time this coming weekend and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions regarding any crags or routes that they would recommend? Also, what's this I hear about requiring bolt plates or something? Cheers

First up, I have never climbed in the you yangs so I can't help you there. However, i can give you some advice on the humble Australian Carrot bolt. These are machine bolts that traditionally were placed by drilling out a hole smaller than the diameter of the bolt and bashing it in. You sometimes see glue ins but not all that often. Think of them as fixed hangers without the hanger. You need to pick up some hangers from a climbing store so you can place them over the bolt head thus allowing you to place your quickdraw. I haven't bought any for a while but I recall them being around $5 each? They are less conspicuous but otherwise a complete pain in the arse bacause of the extra gear you need and the extra time it takes fumbline around on the route. You will find them all over Autralia, fortunately many are being replaced with glue in ringbolts by individuals or organisations like the rebolting fund in in the Blue Mountains in NSW. Hopefully someone can give you some beta on the You Yangs.
