Hey guys and gals. I have an eight year old sister and I think it's time she started climbing with me. I get so jealous when I get to the crag and I see little kids climbing with their moms and dads and I wish my sister could be there with me. Now heres my question; how do I accomplish this. I know she can't start off doing the training excersizes I do and she defiantly can't train on my campus board so what do I do. Is is best to take her out on real rock or make a small climbing wall for her at home? tanx for the advice.

If you don't have the knowledge on how to do this already then maybe you should keep her safe and leave her at home.

Such a nice, condescending answer there, kman. dan, bring her to a gym if there's one near you. let her try the beginner walls. if she doesn't like it, then you'll have only wasted a few hours and a couple bucks. otherwise, then it's real rock for you.

Take her out on easy climb, maybe slab. Put her on tr and if you have another belayer you can climb solo right with her. Don't be suprised if she's outclimbing you soon.

Good Question... I took my 7 yr old daughter to the gym and now I cannot go without her! She has friends who tried it and wont go back. I suggest a gym experience first to see the reaction. Don't listen, read her. Make sure she wants to do it rather than wants to do it for you. If it works... off to the rocks... The wall is good for the basics. The real training begins on the rock.

Thanks for the input guys...and yes, ever since she has known about me climbing she's wanted to climb. I'll try and get her started asap and if she likes it, great, but if she doesnt maybe I'll have more luck when I get kids of my own.

I second the "gym" comment...maybe go when it isn't so busy. She may feel safer in the indoor environment, and the pressure will be off of her, as you can go around looking at other climbers and maybe she can meet some other kids her age. Just a thought. Wish I had a little sister to take climbing, you are lucky! -Kate.
