I've had some issues with my back for years that always seems to get worse when I am more active than normal. When Kayaking alot, I had to see a chiropractor regularly, and now climbing seems to be straining it as well. Yesterday, while sport climbing, I really tweaked it..it feels like a pulled muscle in the middle of my back. Anyone else have thoughts on back strain and climbing?? Thanks.

Try working out on a roman chair - back extenstions, sit-ups etc. I know that it's a little out of vouge but it works great. Deirdre

beerandblood is right, i tweaked my back to, and every movement strained it, and stretching is the best cure. Stretch it every night and it should come good in a week. And, if pain persists, please, see you doctor.

I started climbing after a bad car accident in which I hurt my back & neck and I've discovered a few things that really work: learn to distinguish good pain from bad pain; lay off if you're muscles (back) are too tired to take the stress; build up your abdomen and other auxilliary muscles to relieve the strain on your injury; take rest days and, finally, try Yoga for strength, stretching, focus & relaxation. One other thing to consider is Massage Therapy, Accupuncture or Physiotherapy instead of the Chiroprator and see how they all compare. If you have to live with a back problem for the rest of your life then it's better to try and find what's most effective (or which combination of treatments) so that you can minimize pain, suffering & aggravation to your back

Could you be more specific about what area of your back (C,T, L)generally bothers you? Do you know if these troubles are disk related or are really confined to the muscle? I'm not an MD but I've got 3 different problems in 3 different areas in my back, so I have different "routines" depending which injury is flared up. If you don't know, it's always best to start with an accurate diagnosis from a specialist and to follow that up with 2-3 physical therapy sessions to learn the maintenance exercises for your specific problem.

I have the same problem from swimming. Your not alone and i feel your pain. The pain is probably in your lumbar (lower region) of your back, right? The best solution for this is Physical therapy. Its not the most fun, but its the best. It helped me get my back a little bit better than what it was. They concentrate on massaging the muscle, chiropracting, stretching, and working out. I definitly suggest PT for you.
