climbing weaknesses?

ok everyone, enough denial: what is holding u back? what are ur biggest climbing weaknesses? u can answer in any sense (so if slopers really ARE ur biggest weakness, tell us about it... although i would recomend u try and go beyond the physical).

physically - i have a really hard time pulling the lips of roofs and other similar things. anything where my feet push out but my hands and body need to go up, just like The Gill Egg at teh Gunks...
i also have a hard time with big dynos, and with one-arm moves, anything where u really need to yard off of one hand entirely. i feel pretty well balanced between grip types though (slopers, crimps, pinches, ect...)

mentally - my biggest mental problem is fear, but not really the fear of falling or the landing or anything. i rarely feel held back by a fear of getting hurt from falling (of course this doesn't mean i haven't been scared like sht on some stuff...), but my problem is i just really really don't want to fall. because if i fall, i have to try the whole problem over again, and i would much rather just send it now. so what happens is often i will "overthink" things and won't use enough power to stick the move, thinking either that i will need the energy later in the problem or that i don't want to do a big dynamic move and miss and fall - whenever u do a big move like that, u are uncertain of whether or not u will stick it, whereas with most static moves u can be sure of doing the move. this really hurts my ability to throw.

i think i'm getting better though

SOUND OFF!

My weaknesses are purely mental. I have trouble pushing myself if there's the least chance of falling. I figure that roped climbing would help me overcome this problem (gain more confidence when off the deck). However, I am too lazy to take the time to do roped climbing. I'm getting a rope soon, so hopefully that will motivate me to get on lead.

Physically, the biggest thing that's holding me back is the 40 extra pounds. I know my climbing will really improve if I can manage to lose just some of the weight.

My mental state is really what I use to pull my butt up the rock. My desire to finish the climb is so strong that it usually overrides my brain saying "Hey fat guy, you're not supposed to be climbing this!"

Financially there's a lot holding me back. I'm poor.

physically: endurance. i still get pumped on semi-short sport routes...that's what i get for strictly bouldering for a year before getting on the rope. also, i've got a nagging wrist injury on my right wrist that keeps me from putting much weight on anything slopey. i'll be seeing a doctor about that once the new benefits kick in...

mentally: i still don't fully trust the protection. you won't see working a route too much, since when i pop off, i want back on the rock pretty quick. it makes me very uncomfortable just hanging there, which serisouly distracts me from the route. oddly enough, it's not the falling that bothers me...i'll take a 10-20 foot fall on lead and shake it right off. but when i'm sitting there thinking about the pro, that's when i get nervous.

switching from being on belay to rappel is especially tough. i can see the bolts right there in front of me, and all i can think about is the system failing, even though i know in the back of my mind that it won't.

I think fear of the unknown is my biggest weakness. I can't onsight to save my life, but I often send routes second try on which I flail hopelessly first. Once I know what holds to expect, what gear to carry and where the rests are, I'm good to go. Call me "Mr. Second Attempt."

Overhangs are my weakness. Alotof that problem is because I am short.

Also, trusting my anchors. I have read everybook on the systems just need more experience.

xanx, neat photo in your bio.
If you've only been climbing a year and a half, you're pretty far along

Actually think that your self analysis is pretty good.

Everybodies weakness is different, different style (have had high ball boulderers think I was rad for leading trad go figure), different physicality (I'm too short, I'm too short), different experience, (I had a lot of previous rigging experience so ropes, gear, knots and nuts were easy), different mental processing (I'm working on not getting worked up, getting tunnel blindness from fear, keeping cool and calm and climbing)

PS I have agree with you about having sometimes to repeat a problem to get back to where I keep blowing off

Keep cranking

This is a great topic.

Mental weaknesses: Lots of them, including a great fear of heights or rather a fear of FALLING, and perhaps the biggest one to overcome, my belief that my body isn't capable of something. Many times after I bail on a route I think of how I could have done something if I'd just had enough mental go-to to push through it.

Physical weaknesses: Again, a lot. Mainly doing overhanging things, like xanx said pushing out with my feet and pulling up with my hands. And my hand strength isn't up to par, so crimpers kill me.

luckily, i'm arrogant enough that i rarely get intimidated by hard problems/moves 8) i just keep convincing myself that that V11 isn't really that hard.

Physical: Left wrist. Injured it pretty bad a while ago and have had a hard time getting it back into proper shape.

Mental: Also my wrist. I'm terrified of hurting it again and having to go through all the surgery and rehab again, as well as having to start over from the bottom, yet again.

Physically my endurance sux!
Mentally, my confidence is not always consistent.

Also, sometimes when I get to the crux on a hard route I hesitate and hang out too long! I need to work on speeding through cruxes on hard routes.

My climbing weakness is my body positoining and the liberal use of my strength ( which wears out quick ). So in short I need to become much more efficient of a climber and concentrate on putting the weight on my feet.
