We desperately need more coders, so if you are able to code, please send a PM to Tim (tim), Eric (eric), or Trevor (trevor). They also can tell you what you asked, as I am a computer gumbie.

In reply to: I wish I could help. I dont know jack about php though. *soap box*Good. Keep it that way. Learn Java, C++, Perl, Bash Shell, Python, Japanese before you learn PHP. */soap box* Why such a desparate need for coders? Was there an exodus?

Nope... Just that we have lots we want to do, and really only two coders, and it's not like they work full time for the site. So the workload far outweighs our resources. I've put on my ruby red shoes and clicked my heels together and said, "please all of a sudden happen... please all of a sudden happen", but have since realized that for anything to happen someone has to take the time to make it happen.

I'm good at picking up technoweenie stuff. Chances are that I could code for ya if I put my mind to it. Gimme small jobs though. Rather fluents in HTMl and know PHP to a minor degree. Plan on learning PHP, if only to spite ryanhos  . Actually have wanted to learn it for a while, but haven't had reason.

In reply to: Why such a desparate need for coders? Was there an exodus? Every so often people step up to the plate. 99.9% run away screaming when they see that what they are up against. It isn't hard and the situation is soooo much better than it was but it's not like you can walk in and instantly tackle complex problems that will make you a rock star. The three active coders -- Tim, myself, and Biff -- have all been working on this site in one way or another, off and on, for quite some time. Of us Tim is the only one crazy enough to have consistently put time in for... shoot, I don't know how long. Of course Trevor still contributes, but is more focused on other aspects of the site these days. If you don't know PHP, OOP, and don't have some background in basic software engineering practices, you have a huge learning curve. Our code base is large, complex, messy, and evolving. Not to mention poorly documented (but at least now there is some). If you're really smart and know PHP or some other similar language reasonably well, it will still take a substantial effort to understand our code and be able to work with it. Most people aren't willing to put this level of effort in, particularly when you don't get paid. Heck it doesn't even count in your user rating... I don't want to discourage people from getting involved, I just want to make sure they understand that it is a non-trivial commitment. But if you're game I can get you started and will happily provide you with whatever documentation you need if it doesn't exist already. The only things I ask of you are that: - you have some knowledge of PHP. If you know C/C++ you can pick it up on the fly. But I can't teach you programming. - you understand that we have a process and coding standards and be willing to follow these.

to answer your question, rc.com runs on a Commodore 64 with a cat-fur modem. Sometimes during peak activity, when there are 2 or 3 people all logged in at the same time, it gets a little slow. That's when our sekrit weapon, the Tandy, gets pressed into service. Thanks to the Hy Teck mysql database we use (transactions? who needs 'em?), we have a hot backup on the Tandy, and thus it can charge right into the fray, allowing us to serve dozens of webpages per day. It's all very sophisticated. You should see our colo.

Tim... In all honesty, I still have my early TI-99 4A in my garage from 1982. If I can donate it for "the cause" I will gladly do so, but it's only 16K... I even still have my tape recorder to store programs I wrote, as I couldn't afford a floppy drive. It has much better graphics that the C64 or the TRS80 though. Hell, I even remember the Apple IIE... Man I'm old. :(

Wow, TRS-80 and Apple IIE. I remember those. I think I might still have them both holding up a ping-pong table in my parent's basement. I wonder if they have kitch value or something now....hmmmm, I'll trade you these TWO computers for a Cam...what a deal...

All this fancy high fallooten hardware is fine and dandy but all the mods have to ride pedal powered electricity generators and the admins have to keep running around on one of them new fandangelled rat treadmills to power it all, that`s the real marvel of what goes on behind the scenes at the all new high techanology rc.com. I tell ya my legs have been getting pumped due to the high traffic around here lately.

In reply to: It has much better graphics that the C64 or the TRS80 though. I never had graphics on my TRS80  well..kinda a little bit I guess...after 2000 lines of basic. Iv'e been poking with php and I'm thinkin pretty soon I might actually be able to help some. I'm probably gonna get smacked for not using the search, or actually looking for myself, but is there somewhere I could get a look at some of the code to get a handle on the way you guys ahve been doing things?
