Got to www.seclimbers.org and look at the southeast information there as well as the forums. In short, your closets good climbing areas are probably HP 40 (bouldering) and Palisades (trad and top rope). Sand Rock is nice for having a little bit of everything and some classic climbs, but the crowds can get tiring and it is a little further of a drive for you. Though last time I was at Palisades I was reminded of how nice some of those climbs are and how few people actually go there. L.J.

Hey Knucklehead, Check out http://www.urbanoutpost.com/ Hank has regular classes at Palisades, he'll meet you there, let you use his gear if need be, and show you routes, give beta, and make sure you're up to speed on your toprope set up skills. Just bring a lunch and water. $20 for a full day. Can't beat it, and no, I don't work for him. I have been climbing with him regularly for a couple of years though and never failed to have fun. It's also a way to meet some of us locals face to face.

If you want to boulder try Moss Rock Preserve, AKA the boulderfields in Hoover Al, just south of Bham. It would be about one hour from Montgomery. Palisades is about another hour and 15 min if you take the shortest route. Palisades hads roped climbing and some bouldering. HP 40 is not far from palisades. seclimbers.org has more info. If you need a detailed map from I-65 to MRP or Palisades, PM me your email and I'll send you one.

Sandrock is best if you go to the very end and climb around there then come to the area close to the parking lot around sunset... thats how we always avoid the crowds..

I would check into climbing at Moss Rock, Sandrock, HP40 or Palisades. HP40 is great for bouldering, and Sandrock has some good sport routes.

Thanks for all the info everybody. The urban outpost seemed right up my alley they have a beginner class in Feb, They have an anchoring class first Do you think I could go to that then the beginners? I have climbed a good amount in the gym when I was stationed in texas but its been awhile. What do you think?

I had been climbing indoor for about 4 months and outdoor for about 2 and I took a begginners class just to have an excuse to leave town for a weekend... but it was pretty beneficial... I knew most everything we went over, but you always seem to keep learning something else... plus met some pretty cool people!
