I lifted this story from a website about Yosemite National Park.
Due to the increasing frequency of rescues taking place on El Capitan due to incapacitation from dehydration, the NPS has proposed placing a water tank on the summit of El Capitan. There would be approximately 1000 feet of hose by the tank and the tank itself would be disguised with trees and netting. If a group got into trouble, they could call or radio for help and the hose could be lowered to the climbers. Consideration was initially given to permanently attaching a hose to the Nose but that idea was quickly shot down. The tank should be in place by next summer.

Are you fvcking kidding me?!?! There are way more things they should do before doing that. How about the National Pavement Service making Sickle a nicer bivy by expanding it to be a 10'x30' platform with a stove permanently bolted to the rocks (yes, that will take a lot of bolt holes, but we are talking about safety here). You see this way, you won't have to get all tired and drink a bit of water on the jug back up after fixing.
Or maybe they could just sport bolt the Reticent since you have to haul a ton of water for 15 days of climbing since it takes like 8 hours to lead a pitch. That would help I'm sure.

Jeeeeez, next thing you know, they will make a way up Half Dome so you don't actually have to use ropes to do it. Wait a minute...
Anyone with half a brain and half an ethical training in climbing (sport climbers need not apply) please write to protest this.

Time to have the park service call a Physicists about the effects of having H2O dropping a 1000 feet through a hose... it would be like trying to drink out of a full pressure fire hose. Yeah I'm going to fill my nalgene with that.

Someone is yanking your chain...no one is going to lower a 1000 ft hose down el cap. The hose would likely wipe out someone on the way down. It is all a lot of BS!

There already is an El Capitan Hilton. Chongo lived there for a whole year. It's at the base of Scorched Earth, named after the fireplace there.

It would be more fun to just use a super high pressure nozzle from the base. Either the climber would get a good drink (and shower) or the water would just blast them on up to the top. Either way, problem solved without all that damm hiking up and down.

i also have to second the notion that water falling 1000 feet is going to be moving pretty fast...
that said, while on the topic of outrageous proposals, i think they should drill into the rock, put a huge resovoir of "Rolling Rock" beer inside, and install taps at every pitch.
actually, u know what is HILARIOUS and i SWEAR is true is i was doing work on the trails behind my house (really small and flat, but it's still woods) and everything is overgrown with prickers and roots and stuff and we were building a wooden bridge across a little drainage ditch (only like a 12' span) and the organizer from STEM (an enviromental organization coordinating the whole effort) said the bridge (and entire trail) had to be WHEELCHAIR ACCESSABLE!!! oh and did we forget to mention that the only way onto the trail head was by first crossing a 15' wide stream by leaping from stones? lol!

First of all, this idea, if true, is idiotic. But, it is feasible. If the hose isn't too wide, the water will flow as quickly as it is coming out of the tank because of a vacuum and the cohesiveness of water. It's not like a freefall.
I like how the nanny state of california has swung its protective net around climbers, soas to protect us from ourselves. Anyone who goes up El Cap should have at least someidea of what they're getting into. God forbid you have to take responsibility for your own actions. If only everyone had more common sense, then the NPS could use this money for other things, like restoration projects.

I think it's a good thing, due to the problems with dehydration, that's a good idea. It's not going to ruin anything by doing this, only help, anybody with a half a brain, ethicly speaking of course, should know that nobody should protest the safety of others. Selfishness...

Won't they need to put up hoses at the top of every route? Then every at every belay (about 3200 in my estimate) they will need a rack with super long telescoping poles with hooks on the end. How else will the stranded climbers be able to grab the lowered hose unless it comes down perfectly to them. Have you ever tried to lower a rope down to someone on a windy day?--not too mention all the overhanging routes. Or maybe they could train a monkey to guide the hose down to the victims. I here monkeys can climb really well (even without stealth rubber).
Or maybe I'm just missing the whole idea. I mean, I can't be expected to be an expert in everything.

I think whoever started this rumor is probably the same one that said Suicide was being closed so they could blow up the rock and mine it for kitchen countertop granite :roll: . But hey, it's getting responses!

One of the best trolls I've ever seen. (You posted no link to the source, what else am I to believe?)
But for all of you nay-saying armchair physicists out there, realize that this IS possible. It's clumsy and probably blasphemous, but it IS possible. It's only about 80 lbs of water by my estimate and the rate can be controlled very easily. Now here's the real crazy thing. I've thrown 40ft top ropes down and gotten them snagged on the wall repeatedly. How is some park ranger gonna lower even 100 feet of hose to some dehydrated climber w/out getting the hose snagged? Next thing you know, they'll build a freestanding scaffolding 20 feet out from the wall so you can just rope-swing across and jungle-gym the rest of the way up!
