I just flew back from CA and packed my gear in my checked bag, but I was thinking, has anyone ever carried gear in their carry-on? Would those touchy feely rent-a-cops take it away, since it could be construed as a "weapon"? Anyone ever lost any gear flying? Mine got home safe, but I was just wondering... That would really blow.

When I flew from SF to Las Vegas I carried my backpack with me that had my shoes, chalk, gri-gri, harness, various biners and slings. When I dropped that bag on the X-ray machine I thought I was going to get strip searched and gang raped but the guy looked at the x-ray monitor, looked at me, looked at my girl friend and then let me pass without a second glance. I was surprised. And this was after 9/11. Of course, your mileage may vary. -n

I went on a trip to Denali National Park a few years ago. I had a huge bag with ALL my backpacking equipment. I had just bought a bunch of it, and it was well over $1000 worth of stuff. They lost the bag. Luckily I was staying the night in Anchorage before going to Denali and told them they damn well better have that bag at my hotel when I woke up and they did. I guess no harm no foul, but I was worried until that bag was in my hand! Josh

When I was coming back from Yose a few months ago, I got some close questioning about some cams I had in my carryon. They let me through, but you'd think Oakland would see a lot of climbing gear going through security...Nut tools will get you stopped every time, too. Ya know, the new 50 pound check-in bag limit combined with increasingly-suspicious security people, packing for flying is getting complicated!

I flew to Vegas this summer to climb. I got on the plane in Baltimore carrying my entire rack except for hexes and nut tool, no problem, not even a bag search. The woman asked me what was in the bag, I said "rock climbing gear" and I was on my way. In Vegas I tried to go through security to go home and got completely denied. They unzipped the bag, took one look, called over their supervisor, and I was escorted out of the security area. Ended up having to ship my stuff home for $50. It all depends on which security guard you get. If you get shut down at one lane, you can even try going through the next lane over, it's a complete clusterf...

There's a few things you can do. 1) take a chance and go with your equipment. Usually this isn't a bad idea with the viewpoint that most of us want to put up as little effort in these kind of situations. Most often the security will recognize the equipment as recreational equipment and let you pass. Although you do stand a chance to get an asshole who will either detain or confiscate your equipment. 2) Contact the airports that you will be flying through and ask them to point you in the right direction to their policies pertaining traveling with recreational equipment. The policies are pretty generous I've found. 3) Contact the airlines that you will be flying with and again ask them to point you in the right direction to their sports equipment policies. Most often you can get this material off of their websites. Doing a combination of these along with a respectful attitude will get you through even the tightest airports. I've never traveled with rock climbing gear before but I have traveled with skydiving rigs, and you can imagine how bad wanting to carry on a parachute rig looks to a low level airport security guard.
