Has anyone else read the article in the latest Climbing magazine where Katie Brown spends some time interviewing two teenage comp stars? While Emily Harrington comes across as someone who genuinely loves climbing and the outdoors, Tori Allen comes across as a self serving attention seeker who will use weapons of mass publicity to further her cause. I'd feel sorry for her if she was not so distasteful in all her actions. If I was her parents I'd be horrified at the unflattering portrait, however they seem as much, if not more, to blame for this monster. If I were Emily, I'd feel badly about having my name mentioned in the same story. Other thoughts?

yeah i read that too. Climbing trading cards and action figures??!?!?!? That's about the last thing we need. Sounds like another parent exploiting their child athlete to me.

I felt the same way about the article. It sounds like Tori's dad is pretty shameless about promoting/taking advantage of her stardom. Action figures and trading cards? Emily's dad apparently is a little more down to earth. I hate to judge anyone due to what I read in any magazine, let alone Climbing, but come on, the girl's in high school. Se is a gifted athlete, and climbs harder that I probably ever will, but MAN!

Think of all the fun places you could leave your Tori Allen action figure! 10. In the summit register of Mt Everest 9. In Hans Florine's speed chalk bag 8. Wedged in the critical finger lock on Open Cockpit 7. Forced head-first into a hand drilled 1/4 inch bolt hole, on lead from a natural hands free stance 6. In a pile with the Steph Davis matching gold lame chalk bag and climbing slippers 5. Hanging from Jim Donini's car key ring, by a noose 4. As a hand drawn picture illustrating a "do not do this" warning in the 8th edition of Freedom of the Hills 3. Installed as the Chief Moderator at rockclimbing.com 2. Traded to ptpp in exchange for some big wall tips. And the number one place to leave your Tori Allen doll... 1. On John Gill's desk, pretending to do a 1-finger front lever as she climbs the flat screen computer monitor. Thank you. Thank you very much. DMT

In reply to: Think of all the fun places you could leave your Tori Allen action figure! 10. and so on..... Thank you. Thank you very much. DMT Gag...sputter....Haw Haw Haw....Gag.... sputter Perhaps Leo Houlding could bolt her to a climb and use her for a hand hold Or as a toilet paper holder for the portapotty at Camp 4 We should have a "Pose Tori" contest. Everybody post pics of their Tori doll posed in...ah...situations.....like Flat Stanley. Hell, run her under a steam roller and we can post pics of "Flat Tori". (pun not intended)

could someone post the article, I haven't read it. I got to meet Tori about a year and a half ago and she was very nice. She hit it off with my daughter (who was 6 at the time) and they palyed with each other. You have to remember that she is a kid. Fame and fortune are not easy to handle when you are mature enough to handle it. If she doesnt' have down to earth parents, then that's not going to help. Hopefully, reality will smack her in the face some day and she will be a better person for it. Josh

That article was a mess, but I guess that's par for the course for Climbing. Their writing is consistently horrible. Like it is at all relevant what color polo shirt Tori's dad wears, that Emily drives a green Subaru (gee, she DOES live in Boulder  ), Katie's shallow observations on like, totally loving the sport... oh wait. We're trashing just Tori again. Um yeah, unflattering. Yeah.

Hopefully, reality will smack her in the face some day and she will be a better person for it. Josh A good many of Tori's peers dislike her for all of the attention she gets, most of which is the result of an overactive publicity attack. If she was nice to your daughter, it is because she revels in the spotlight and the adulation of little kids who think she is famous; i.e. she hands out posters, tee shirts, action figures, playing cards and autographs to the young or the non-climbing public who then think she is the best thing since nylon rope. They follow the piper, like lemmings to the sea. However, watch those souvenir monkeys that get thrown out to other climbers at professional events. The ones that don't get rocketed hot potato style get their appendages removed like wings from flies. The simple truth is, most of her peers detest her. I know lots of fifteen year old girls who would see Tori for what she is; that is mature enough to call a spade a spade. And yes, it appears that both parents are riding her for all she is worth, IMHO.

Possible unintentional hijack: Speaking of articles, has anyone seen the R&I on the Taquitz accident by Alison? There certainly was much posting and concern on the site here immediatly afterwards. I was somehat surpirised to see it make the cover. Any thoughts (aside from telling me to post in the R& I forum...)?

(pun not intended) As appealing as that idea is, wouldn't that play into the marketing "genius" of her father, and sell more dolls, since we all have to go and buy one...

It was written by a contributing writer. As unintelligible as it may be, sometimes it's refreshing to read an article from a real climber rather than a real writer.

They have been trying this cute new schtick of getting "real" climbers to write features. Katie, Dave Struthers, Cedar Wright, those first-person journals. All of these articles have been awful. Not like they'd really miss me, as there are plenty of people with significantly lower standards to make up for me, but I am strongly considering cancelling my subscription because the tripe they print is insulting to my intelligence as a climber and general reader. And I am very tolerant of crapdickular writing. I have worked in student journalism. Just see what a kid with 3 months of college tries to churn out. It's painful. Climbing is a magazine. A professional publication. I'm sorry if I hold it up to the standards of providing clear, professional prose- which means "real" writers, not just real climbers who have buddies who have buddies. Climbing- S.O.S.!!

They have been trying this cute new schtick of getting "real" climbers to write features. Katie, Dave Struthers, Cedar Wright, those first-person journals. Yah, including the "Yo Homie" (vehdy-scady) X-rated Graham article a little while back. Of the three writers you mentioned, the only one I liked was Dave's...but then again, I think he got my vote cuz of the goof factor (Inertia 2 and all). MY biggest gripe with the magazine is how thin it's gotten since I started reading it. Funny...in the past 6 years, they've never done a piece on Seneca...oh well ...bunch of valid points deleted... The only thing I can say is what's been repeated many times...Climbing is basically a sport's magazine (dare I say such a mainstream word?) for climbers. Therefore I wouldn't expect it to be on par with say, a literary magazine. As a friend of mine, who was semi-featured in an old article about the New River Gorge, once said, "...If you want them to feature [a], write up something and propose it to them. " Now being an elec. engineer and a numbers guy, I know my place when it comes to professional writing, but (this isn't meant to single you out climbsomething) if those of you who have writing skills submit articles, maybe they'd get better features. I dunno....

Yeah, they'll publish a picture taken by just about anyone...(kudos, btw, Hillary!!). Or, didn't you know? Ha ha ha... Anyhoo, I only quickly glanced thru the article...and thought it was pretty ok, uhh...good in fact. Wasn't very flattering to TA. Some nonflattering insight...pretty refreshing! You couldn't have known you had a photo credit...oh no, what if Climbing reads this thread? You'll never be published again... Brian in SLC

a few months back, in the quotes section of Climbing, they took something from her autobiograhy that went something like this: "I cant wait to get to California so I can climb on real Yosemite LIMESTONE to train for ElCap" that is not a direct quote, but none the less, it still shows her knowladge of climbing!

oh crap, i'm agreeing with climbsomething. eek. next, i'll be thinking that jt512 is the funniest guy around. caveat: i haven't read the article. if katie brown is an accomplished interviewer, then she could easily have skewed the article to make t. allen look bad. if the article was well written, then it's the editor's job to make the article balanced. (and yes, i know who katie brown is.) if this was her first article for Climbing, then it was the editor's job to work with her on the article. this is why writers are paid maybe $0.25 per word, and editors make, well, a lot more. i don't care for the existence that is tori allen, but i don't think either she nor katie need be slagged for the article. new writers for publications need to be worked with. no matter who good they are. now where's my stuffed monkey?
