The Flaming Gorge Dam Overlook area is under "high terror" alert. And basically, it's illegal to go climb down there. I'll be down there climbing with my friends and cops will hike all the way down there just to tell you to leave. Don't bother arguing with them. I've already argued that "You can drive on top of the stupid dam, but you can't climb in the area hundreds yards away?" Supposedly you can go to the Bureau of Reclamation or something and get permission, but I haven't done that yet. Sometimes you can go to the dam and ask the cops for permission and they'll give you the ok, but I would call first or something to save you the drive. If you do get kicked out I recommend going bouldering at Mustang Ridge. It's only like five minutes away if that. And it's perfectly ok to climb there. There's a sign that says "Mustang Ridge", turn there and you'll see a cliff line near a lake. It's a bit of a walk. There's a huge overhang and then lots of boulders. Probably lots undiscovered, and has much diversity.

Currently we are able to climb there again. They would prefer though if you go and ask for permission from the sherif or someone that works at the dam first. Every time I ask the guy that works at the dam for permission he says its not a good idea and gives me a lecture because it's crappy rock and I'll get hurt, he says I should go to Yosemite and climb the big rock there because it's solid and I won't die. So, just ignore him, it's good rock, and Yosemite is kinda far away, and say yeah yeah don't worry it's solid and I won't hold you liable if I fall.

What are the odds that OBL and the like have ever heard of the Flaming Gorge Dam in Wyoming? It is in Wyoming, right? Hell, I don't even know where it is. I hate to sound callus, but I wouldn't give two shits if someone blew it up either. So what would be the point?

Does anyone else think its strange that people in places like Wyoming seem more concerned about terrorists than people in... Oh say, DC?

Everybody, please, remain terrified. You are in imminent danger. The terrorists are coming to get you. They could be anybody. They could strike anywhere. Only 'we' can protect you. Bush/Cheney for Supreme World Dictators '08!!!

This message brought to you by Keith, who is sitting exactly 3 miles north of the White House and is far more worried about John Ashcroft than he is about terrrorists.

On what grounds? Is it public property or private? Is it secured/classified land?

Sounds like the cops are feeding you a load of BS.

On the grounds that you might take one of those cams and start flailing hopelessely at the dam wall attempting to break it down....  Its all bulls***. They basically want to limit anyone from getting close in case they have WMD (which according to Bush EVERYONE does) and plan on blowing up the dam.

It's just a couple hundred yards up the road before the dam. It's in Dutch John Utah actually, not Wyoming. I guess it's their land considering you have to get a recreation pass to go on the lake, camp on the ground. They don't require us to get a rec. pass to climb, but just for consideration we give them the heads up what we're doing so we can climb all day and then come back next week and do it again.
