Around mid July, it's like grasshopper mating season or something, because there are THOUSANDS of them hopping around. I dared my friend to eat one, a big one, and he did. (way to go Calypsobob) He said it tasted like burnt chicken, but really not that bad. Also there can be some massive black ants, I tried one of those and they tasted like a citrus kinda thing. So come on I dare you to try one too. I didn't have the guts to eat a grasshopper, but supposedly they're not that bad. But they kick!

When you are eating live grasshoppers always pop them in your mouth tail end first so they don't jump partway down your throat and cause you to choke. Some red ants have a toxin that causes your chest to feel like some parked a truck on it. Goes away in a coupel of hours. Things I learned the hard way!

I spent a couple of months in Australia waaaaaaaay back when and met this guy who offered to cook me an authentic Australian meal - whatever the heck that was. Well, we did have the proverbial "shrimps on the bar'b", but he also served those humungous white grubs, some leggy insect things, and chocolate-covered bumblebees for dessert. I was much more "game" back then and tried them all - washing them back with copious quantities of anything alcoholic - have to admit, the taste wasn't too bad - but the texture - UGH! To this day, I can't even stomach oatmeal!

That would be witchetty Grubs wishiwaswest and it is not shrimp on the barbey but rather prawns on the barbey. We call shrimp Prawns. Prawns can also be a pejorative as in "Ah ya silly Prawn".

a co-worker of mine ate one of these: (the blue larva, aproximately the size of a thumb) http://zebra.biol.sc.edu/moth/manduca2.gif on a dare, he stuck one in the microwave, as we all huddled around to watch the innards spew out in a glorious yellow puddle, leaving nothing but a white, slightly chewy worm. apparently, it also tastes vaguely of asparagus. quite a colorful little fellow. lol

Man, they were HUGE!

Yep. Sucked down a grasshopper at band camp in High School. Did it on a dare to get a rootbeer. Kinda had a peppermint flavor. It washed down pretty good with that A&W. Ed

We eat plenty of bugs everyday without needing to run around in a field with a bug net. It gets into (or rather, doesn't get out of) our food through processing, and winds up on our table. Peanut butter is a good example. Beer is another. Jillions of aphids are on the hops when they are harvested, and there's just no way to get them all off. I heard on the radio once the number of bug parts in a bottle of beer, can't remember now what it was, but it was a lot.

A Japanese friend's parents came to visit and brought grasshoppers that were sauteed in soy sauce and sugar. I gotta say, they were quite tasty and had a satisfying crunch. I ate several and would eat more given the chance.
