Just curious how high one can boulder untill it becomes free solo-ing. I have heard 30ft, does that seem reasonable or just nutz?

For me I get a little shaky on things that are over 30 ft. For me a good boulder problem is around 20 ft. or so. But on that same problem it should be enough difficulty to give me a challange. If the problem is any higher than about 30 ft. I prefer to top rope it if I can or only go up as far as I am comfortable going. Call me a wuss for thinking that, but anyone that climbs higher than that unaided is either nuts or has a death wish. But that is just me and I don't really care much for a trip to the hospitial to get stiched up from a nasty fall.

You boulder up to 30 feet kamo!? A fall like that can break your ankles and i dont care if you even have 5 inches of foam in your crash pad. As you see the vast majority of people in my post said about 15 is the most they will go. 15 to me is all i will go. If you have ever fallen that high you would understand.

Yeah, 30 feet is definitely to high to boulder..for me anyway. I took about 35 feet one time. Luckily it was a slab so I didn't build up a lot speed on the descent I only ended up with a severely bruised heal, hamburger hands, and lost about a square foot of skin off my left thigh. Now I stick to things between 10 and 15 feet. Much less painful that way.

Miagi, I know that I can break my ankles from that hieght but at he same time when i do go that high I choose the problems that I know that I can handle. I have fallen how ever from around 19 or 20 feet. And it hurt bad. Mainly because I missed my crash pad and my spotter was not paying attention. The key to one bouldering that high is haveing a spotter that you can trust. Out of all my falls that I have taken from bouldering I have had sprained ankles and chunks of flesh taken from my elbows and knees. But one can not denounce the rush that one gets when they reach as high as they do. [ This Message was edited by: kamofladge on 2002-03-25 12:56 ]

Your boulder pad still might work. its just how you use it. 1. Have an attentive spotter. He must spot you by moving the pad if you traverse and making sure you dont tumble over when you hit the ground. 2. The roll technique works to help your ankles.

What I meant is when the boulder pad is more useful as a sponge than a pad!

People have tripped and fallen and hit a rock and died, does that mean they were soloing?

30 feet = nuts. The gyms I've been in have a 4 foot foot limit for bouldering or a 10 foot hand limit. These are pretty comparable. I'd say that is a limit low, but 30 is just plain crazy.

Call me crazy then But it is one of the biggest rushes that I have ever gotten when I have gone that high! Plus not to mention the added thrill of down-climbing it after I get done!

Dude, did you guys see the latest Climbing Mag bit with Jason Keil's (sp?) ascent of Evilution? It is a 55 foot boulder problem, with a V10 crux at like thirty feet! That seems to be approaching free solo to me, except for all thee bouldering pads that the dude had.

Isn't this just a disscussion of symantics?? Isn't bouldering just short free soloing. I thought any time your climbed with out a rope it was free soloing. personally about 10-15 ft is my personal limit, but it depends on the landing and my spotters.

No this is not a discusion of semantics. If we were discusing semantics we would be discusing sentence structure, not about bouldering. Just FYI.

I would say about 20 feet. Remember that every ten feet is about one story in a building. I wouldn't go much higher then 15 w/o a trustworthy spotter.

kamofladge Symantics is not a discussion of sentence structure. That is called GRAMMAR. Symantics has to do with the meanings of words. This is exactly a discussion of symantics. as robscate said. I don't believe that the defining point that separates bouldering from low ball free soloing has been set. Whether a given climb is called a hi-ball boulder problem or a free solo is purely in the mind of the climber. The same route could be refered to by both names legitimately. litedawg, I am sorry for giving a wrong deffinition of semantics. But I have found the defintion for it and yours fits closer than my horrible miss-representation of myself. I found this at www.m-w.com and this is what it says: "Main Entry: seˇmanˇtics Pronunciation: si-'man-tiks Function: noun plural but singular or plural in construction Date: 1893 1 : the study of meanings: a : the historical and psychological study and the classification of changes in the signification of words or forms viewed as factors in linguistic development" You are right on your other point also. Ones distinction of bouldering or soloing is in the climbers mind.

Well I think normal bouldering stops at 30 foot but if you cocky and have a good big soft pad maby 40 foot. Free soloing would be any thing above were you only use chalk and shoes.

"Evilution" is a solo. 55 feet is taller then most of the bolted routes we do here in Texas. But you can get hurt at almost any height. A friend of mine broke his tib/fib from a 4 foot fall onto a flat landing when his ankle twisted. Of course another friend of mine fell from 30 feet "bouldering" and spent two weeks in the hospital.
