     I'm looking for everyone's opinion on just how much beta you can hear and still claim an onsight. I know you can't get any really specicic stuff, but what if someone tells you to take the small stoppers. Or if a passerby mentions that your climb is a crimpfest.
Where do you draw the line?

Also, in case your wondering, I finally onsighted a .10c after I "accidentally" heard someone say, "Dude, look high right. That sloper is bomber!" Yeah, I know it's not an onsight but I really think it could have been.

1st try send + beta == flash.

1st try send - beta == onsight

For a proper 'onsight' no beta, preplaced gear or extensive inspection (ie: checking out the holds on rappel) are allowed.

Not like it really matters.

Can you get a telescope and scope all the holds out?

I guess you can still call your 5.10c send an onsight because you probably would have seen that hold anyways. As for the onsight and flash controversy, i agree with fiend. If you stare up from the ground and look around its still an onsight. Any "extensive" inspection like on rappell or telescope should be a flash.

Fiend has it exactly right...not that everyone will agree with it,especially your climbing partner who leads it right after you no falls and trys to claim an onsight!!
